  1. Will a 10 Spd crankset work with a 9 speed drivetrain?

  2. Mine does (ultegra triple) other than a clatter on the middle ring and smallest sprocket combination, probably due to using the wider 9 speed chain (which you have to do if using a 9 speed cassette).

    Cheers,
    Chris

  3. Yup, they are interchangeable 9 works with 10 and 10 works with 9, though Shimano would love to sell you an outboard bearing crank to up the bling factor.

I am currently using Ultegra 9 and am thinking of switching to a shimano compact with outboard bearings. Is it hard to make the change over to the eqiupment?

Hard is a relative term. It's a piece of cake for me, but might be tough for someone else. If you have a minimum of mechanical aptitude it should go smoothly.

Remove Ultegra 6500 cranks, since the cranks are self extracting you just need a hex wrench.
Remove Octalink bottom bracket, special tool required.
Install outboard bearing cranks, different special tool required.
    Install new cranks.
Lower and adjust front derailler to compensate for the compact up front.
