I've just been playing with that one myself. Surprisingly (since I assumed
otherwise), mixing & matching front derailleurs (9 vs 10spd) doesn't give
great results. No problem with the rear derailleur, but the 10-speed front
derailleur expects to see the narrower, 10-speed chain. I could get it to
work sorta ok but not great, but when I changed chains, it worked far
better.

I should also point out that the 10-speed Shimano chain works great on
9-speed rear cassettes. And finally mention that the 9-speed chain works
very poorly on 10-speed-specific chainrings (very noisy, literally rattles
back and forth across the teeth).
