Can i fit a 9 speed 105 rear mech to a sora groupset, and will there be any benefit

YES ...

You can certainly use-and-install a 9-speed 105 rear derailleur with your SORA groupset ...

Subjectively, the 105 rear derailleur looks a little better than the Sora rear derailleur of the same vintage ...

The advantage is that you will reduce the weight of the bike by about 2 ounces ...

  • which is to say, the only reason to change to a 105 rear derailleur is if you need a LONGER cage with more capacity ...
  • but then, an LX or XT rear derailleur would probably be a better choice.

you also get mechanical benefits, more accurate shifting and longer lifespan,

While different wheels can sometimes be beneficial, I strongly doubt that the MAVIC Aksium wheels which you are considering will benefit anyone other than the retailer and/or MAVIC ...

IMO, if you want better wheels, then save your money until you can buy some DT Swiss 240 hubs and then have a set of wheels laced with them.

A set of wheels with SHIMANO Ultegra hubs which are properly adjusted will be almost as good, BTW.
