Back in the 90's I fitted 2 or 3 of my bikes with 180mm cranks. These were usually MTB type (110mm bolt circle) and I put 'road' sized chainrings on them.
Time has passed and I see that all my bikes now have 165mm or 170mm cranks.
A long legged friend of mine recently wanted to go to 180mm, so I told him that I probably had some in the closet or, failing that, there would be some on E-bay.
Well, guess what, I can't find any in my closet OR on E-bay (I mean affordably priced ones)
My question is, what happened to the 180mm cranks that used to be fairly common on MTB's back in the 90"s?

I think they're still being made. Got a set of 180mm Shimano Octalinks year before last, and I think TruVativ makes 180s.
They don't pop up much on eBay, and most of the ones I've seen have been Octalink or ISIS, neither of which I'm inclined to buy. I snagged an older pair of square-taper ones a while back, but haven't got around to swapping them on to the target bike yet. -- Typoes are a feature, not a bug. My bike still has its original 180s. It's a Fat Chance from the mid-80s, now a commuter.
I would rather have 170mm cranks, so from time to time I've thought about changing them, but never got around to it. Which suggests that it doesn't really bother me all that much.

It seems only the top end stuff is available in 180. I got some XT (Octalink) 180's on eBay for $80 a month ago, so the cheap ones do pop up. Some BMX cranks come in long lengths, you might be able to rig something there. They even have longer than 180 I think.
