1993 Tour De France Pictures

With Le Tour getting underway in another day, I've posted
some pictures I took when I was lucky enough to follow the
tour in 1993. While I put the collection together for a
couple of friends who knew enough about cycling to be
interested, I figured the group here would really enjoy a
look back 11 years ago when it seemed like the Indurain-era
would never end.

Some of the pictures aren't that great (a little worn from
album use), but aside from the dust in a few places, I hope
you like 'em.

Enjoy!

Thanks a bunch for sharing those. I liked the LA 'chips & salsa' shot and the candid Indurain pic. Looks like you had a great view.

Like 'em, those casual shots of an approachable LA are small
gems given his superstar status today.

Very nice. Thanks.

wow. Zenon Jaskula.

That guy had to be the most doped guy in professional
cycling ever.

Not that day. According to this, he was first of the Pla
d'Adet and went on to take the stage.

I'm guessing: CLAVEYROLAT Thierry (Fra) as the highest paced
GAN rider.

Ok - I was looking at the other picture with the GAN rider.

Looking back at the site - I didn't notice any guys that
were on Chazal and finished anywhere near the leaders.

GAN Guy is LANCE Pascal (Fra) - he finished much
further down.

If the info on this link is correct:

http://www.memoire-du-
cyclisme.net/eta_tdf_1984_1993/tdf1993.php#Les%20partants

...and if one assumes that the number on the plate is "194"
(it is slightly obscured in the photo), then the mystery
rider appears to be one "Pascal Chanteur". A quick Google of
him shows this pic from '99 (now riding on Casino).

Looks like the same guy to me...

Excellent photos, thanks!

What the heck is that furnace doing in the Banesto team van?
They had to cut a hole in the side of the truck to let the
exhaust vent. Maybe the mechanic lived there?

Yes, very nice pictures. I (dubiously) mentally
associate the extreme dayglo fashion with the '80s, it's
sobering to realize there was a jersey as ugly as
Chazal's as late as 1993.

Damnit, Kyle, now I've been wondering about this for several
hours. I have two bad theories: (1) Something arcane to do
with tubulars?
(2) It's a clothes dryer. Or, maybe it's just a heater
so the mechanic can work there during cold early
season races?

I'm thinking it might not be a furnace after all, but a
solvent bath for cleaning components between messy stages.
