In July 1997, the Shimano American Corp. recalled more than 1 million cranks installed on bicycles in North America. The crank is used to connect the pedal to the frame of the bike.
In October 2017, I contacted my LBS (local bicycle shop) and they honored the recall.
They replaced (at no cost to me) the crank, ball bearings, chain and the front derailleur on my 30-year-old Univega Via Carisma bicycle!
