That Ace and Chechu (even with his finger fracture) don't want to lead USPS in the Vuelta (or co-lead) is indicative of how they don't hunger for a Grand Tour win. That's part of why they are a good fit for the USPS TdF squad, in assisting LA.

USPS has a decent support team for the Vuelta. With VHP, Joachim, Barry, Van Heeswijk (who can be a domestique as well as a sprinter), Rincon, likely Noval.... that's not bad at all, and would give somebody sufficient support if the leader/co-leader were motivated.

I would have liked to see Menchov and Mancebo work together in the mountains in the Tour-- it's a shame Menchov crashed out. Seems Mancebo is too content with 5th, 6th, 10th place... he is very capable of making the podium in a grand tour. Whenever I see Mancebo in the mountains, he's always by himself. Why is no one working for him? In last year's Vuelta he pulled off some good times
in the ITTs (including the one up alto de abantos), so he must not completely suck at time trials which makes me wonder why he is so unmotivated at them.

Is Vino gonna start in the Vuelta for sure? He's such a team player, I hope he goes for everything instead of sacrificing for the team.

Cadel is a former mountain biker (world champ) who has moved into road racing. He has won the tour of Austria twice and did a pretty good Giro a few years ago (2002). He was riding for Mapei and late in the race got the Maglia Rosa (in his first ever grand tour - after Simoni & Garzelli got dumped for doping). On the last major climb of that Giro, he bonked and lost something like 17 minutes so did not place.

Last year he moved to T-Mobile and did not do much as he broke his collarbone 3 times. This year he was looking good and was ready for the Tour but for some dubious reason he was left out. Godefroot said that he was worried about him crashing...

He is doing the Vuelta this year and is a reasonable chance at a top 10 or better finish given that he is a very good climber and time trialler. Aldo Sassi, who is an Italian training guru, rated his physiology as being near the best he'd seen.

Patch70 has covered this well but I will add that he has won a couple of Tours of Austria and some other minor Tours. Every time he seems like he is about to break out with a big performance he hurts himself or cops a raw deal from his team. Hopefully the Tour of Spain will show if he has got the goods.
He achieved his 3rd at the Tour of Murcia on the last mountain stage of the race when he bridged a gap across to Valverde and Piepoli with 2km to go and finished the stage in their company. So if he can produce something like that in the Vuelta he may crack the top 10. He's a solid in the time trials too.

That's very interesting. I tried looking at the info on the link you provided, but my spanish is rather limited. I did notice the elevations on stage 2 though, and it looks like they don't exceed about 1100 meters in that stage. I think the Vuelta goes up higher. I don't know if that would have an impact.

If Valverde competes in Sept., maybe he'll do very well. But look at the spread among the first 3 in this Burgos event--only 6 seconds. And who is this Piepoli?

You're right about Beloki. He's not having a very good year.

I've never heard of anyone breaking a collarbone 3 times in one year. Maybe his body is not made of nails, but his mind must be to be able to keep coming back for more. That's really something.

Then again, he is returning from last year's bad crash.

This Piepoli looks like a consistent, strong rider. He likes to ride the races that might be well publicized in Europe but not in the USA. I guess that's why I don't know much about this rider.

He's done very well in many other races. The best he's done in the Vuelta a Espana is 8th in 1999. That's very impressive. But that was 5 years ago, and he's going to be 33 this year in September. He's either right in his prime or maybe a little past it. It will be interesting to watch this rider's progress in Sept. Actually, when you look back on his record, it seems like his best race is the Vuelta a Burgos.

He came 5th, domestique or not, it is a bloody good effort IMO.

The fact he was a domestique makes it even better.

Aha! It looks like it's Landis' day in the sun now. Maybe Heras will be upset to have left the posties.

I'm pretty sure Cadel was never the world champ. He won the mountain bike world cup series at least once, possibly twice.

I have my hopes on Cunego:) Of all contenders he has the most talent and a winning mentality.

I am curious if the USPS guys can handle him without Heras. I think Floyd is no more as a decent domestic. His good TdF performance is nothing to sniff at, but the TdF winner almost always has a few domestics in the upper ranks.

It seems they profit from being with Lance almost as much as giving up all that energy from him (point in case is Heras who did better in the TdF as domestic).

Whatever the outcome the one who wins it wont be a surefire bet as we have in the TDF
