Ok I've got Australian $1000 to spend and I've decided on a 2005 Avanti Barracuda and a 2006 Specialized Rock Hopper with discs (the blue one) - I've decided on these two bikes cause the local bike shop has a couple in stock and I've been told I can have the barracuda for $970 and the rock hopper with discs has been reduced to $900.
Comparing the bikes on specs there doesn't seem to be much difference - I'd be keen to hear the pro's and con's from others in the know.
