2008 Tour De France Stage 15 - Sunday, July 20: Embrun - Prato Nevoso, 183km

WBT posted in another thread that Basso will not be there for the next Tour. But then there is one full year for the next Tour, and who knows how things may change.
I would like to see FLandis back, but I don't think that will happen. I cannot see the ASO too happy about Basso's participation.

And a new body guard...I won't be too upset if he wins however.
And you know what? The Eurosport English commentators were actually mimicking Evans' whiny voice today, and generally making fun of how he answers questions (specifically about how he doesn't seem to like certain questions). Clearly, he is not winning admirers by his voice or the way he gives interviews.

With that voice and his mannerisms, Cadel comes across as kinda, uh, fruity. NTTAWT.

To the Aussie contengent (Cranky, b1, Thunder, whoever else). I appologize for the "*****" comment. I was sore that Pate was beaten. IF need be, I will tape myself standing on a chair in diapers singing the Australian National Anthem (I guess you guys have one....is it that Foster's song?).
Until 1984, Australia's national anthem was... 'God save the Queen'.

Many people still don't know the words to the actual national anthem; there's no love for it. The 'unofficial' anthem is a song about a tea-drinking sheep-duffer who commits suicide when the cops are on his tail.

Or this, of course. Sing that in nappies if you want, but I don't want to see the film of it.

And TFF, I wanted Pate to win as well.

What's up with that? What is the benefit of being part of the U.K.? Why haven't you criminals set out on your own?

Australia isn't part of the UK. It's been a separate country for over a century now. However, Queen Elizabeth is Queen of Australia.

Incidentally, she's also Queen of Canada, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and its Dominions across the Seas, or whatever it is now (it used to include Emperor/Empress of India). In short, Queen of a bunch of places. Lucky her.

Australians, despite their self-appointed reputation for being irreverent and contravening authority, are in fact deeply conservative. They follow the rules (and the wheels). They are suspicious of change: any change. I think they operate on the 'if it ain't broke' principle.

But the links to the UK are more cultural than anything else these days. Australian humour, language, etc is still mostly interchangeable for its source in the British Isles.

I preferred you when you were a hardass...and not wearing diapers...or singing.

the sovereign of england has the reserve powers though. oh yeah and she is the ultimate welfare queen.

Can't you get your own royalty? Put Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman, and Crocodile Dundee in the Thunderdome and let them fight for it.

Spot on.

Nobody under the age of 25 knows who he is or what the Thunderdome is.
Are there any famous Australians known to Americans that are actually Australian? Even that Russel Crowe fellow is Kiwi. I bet next you'll tell me that the guy who does the voice for The Outback Steakhouse commericals is not Australian.

I would fall back on Steve Irwin, but the vicious wildlife down there seems to have killed him.

We may have to nominate Cranky for King.

As Drongo and classic said, my take also is Australia is conservative, yet also socialistic (comparitive to America... not to Europe).

IMHO....Links to the UK are largely hypothetical... the Queen has only intervened once that I can remember (sacking Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in 1975 when the Senate was blocking supply bills to pass and the country was in an economic mess ... though not that different from the mess the rest of the world was in .... it was a very divisive action though).

The main thing IMO that favoured being part of the Commonwealth was that the UK provided defense support in the event Australia was attacked. The downsides were hardly noticed as the UK didn't interfere in politics (barring 1975). The Monarchy has gradually become more ceremonial and symbolic even to people in the UK, however they pay taxes to support it, Australia doesn't. The need for links to the UK are becoming less relevant IMHO. It will die eventually. The reason it hasn't is because it doesn't cost Aussies much to stay linked. It is largely just a matter of principle and self reliance. To be independent. Officially.

There is only one Australian cyclist that doesn't suck wheel and that's Rogers.

Adam Hansen doesn't either.
There are no prizes for doing the most turns on the front.

I don't know. You are better placed than me to make comments on the lack of awareness of the wider world and general ignorance of the average seppo.
