Cat 3 that hasn't been training because of school. Race results (or lack thereof) reflect this. :(
 
Sorry if this has already been posted, but are most of these numbers based on SRM, PT or a mixture of the two? Is there any adjustment applied to PT numbers to compensate for drivetrain losses, or do you just ignore it?

I think most people just ignore any drivetrain losses using the PT, as well as any losses/gains due to altitude, weather, mood, etc. You just post what you did or extrapolated from other valid data. This isn't meant to be scientific. My 266 W indoors can't possibly be compared to someone's 55 min 40 TT outdoors.
 
This should be interesting. Went for a "bike fit" last night at Specialized BG Fit place and well... lets say that I'm even more whacked than even I though I was, which I guess is never a good thing. A discovered sizeable leg length disparity (2cm - I'm going to get that one checked elsewhere) resulted in a shim under one foot and some cleat adjustments. Stem was changed too.

The whole deal took 3.5 hours.

The result - well, I only rode it for about 15 minutes on the 'trainer' in the shop but it feels rather good.

I think I might change my username from swampy to gimpy. :p
It was rather interesting to hear the questions asked as to if I was having problems going hard on the hills and if I have nagging lower back ache on rides that were predominantly uphill.

So at least now I have a good idea as to why my bike felt like it was "leaning" underneath me when I was riding it.
 
I've been seeing some nice improvements in FTP lately by doing 2x20min every third day. Planning to continue until the improvements tail off, but so far so good. Am moving in July and plan to join a club and start racing once I get settled in.

Up 10 watts, down a kilo. So, not a huge improvement over the past month, but I'm pretty happy with it, considering my horrific training schedule and less than perfect diet, due to finals and end of the year stress. Hellooooo summer and CONSISTENCY!

10w up, 1 kilo down. Average power from 40min L4 workouts. 40->60min drops a few watts but on the other hand the willingness to hurt myself is not 100% on those workouts so I believe that could be more than gained back in a 60min race.

Well if the weather conditions are such that:
- they represent very unusual conditions for that time of the year/season, and
- it will have a significant impact on the result
then perhaps that's not such a good day to test.

Do it the next day instead. or day after that. or next week.

Remember that a test is just one data point but the idea is to make it a good quality data point to supplement the other signs of current fitness level.

Besides, perhaps a few months later your FTP has actually changed and another test might be in order.
 
Typically during March, April, May (ie as things heat up in the valley) it's very windy here. Trees grow at an angle it's constantly that windy but later as the seasons progress the wind dies down. I guess I could always go and find a road that rides straight into the teeth of that wind for 8 or 9 miles instead of doing the loop that I use now but unless I get lucky there's not really a way to get similar days throughout the year.

Does it really change things that much?

I might be good - but mother nature is always going to have the upper hand :p

About that, but unusual circumstances you might say. Sure won't see those sort of relative gains from here on!!

Some perspective. Almost exactly three years ago (8 Aug 06) I did the very same test and my average was 278W. Previous tests on same circuit:

Pre-accident:
8 Aug 06: 278W
13 Sep 06: 315W
1 Nov 06: 324W
5 Dec 06: 326W

Post accident:
23 Sep 08: 248W
16 Dec 08: 287W
18 Aug 09: 299W
