2010 Tour of Flanders News

Armstrong gives his verdict on his Tour of Flanders‎: The Team RadioShack captain was very active in the second half of the race and finished as part of the chase group sprinting for fifth place, two minutes and 35 seconds behind a rampaging Fabian Cancellara. Riders such as 2008/2009 champion Stijn Devolder (Quick Step), Leif Hoste (Omega Pharma-Lotto), George Hincapie (BMC Racing Team) and Juan Antonio Flecha (Team Sky) were also in this group, reflecting the Texan’s solid ride.

Cancellara claims Flanders win after changing bike twice: Second behind the Saxo Bank rider, one minute 15 seconds back, was favourite Tom Boonen of Belgium with compatriot Philippe Gilbert in third at two minutes 11 seconds.

A year after being forced to abandon the race when his chain broke on the Koppenberg climb, Cancellara looked in trouble again when he had to change his bike twice.

Swiss Rider Bests a Native Son in Tour of Flanders: Somewhere in the past few years, as he recorded victories in the Paris-Roubaix and Milan-San Remo classics, won the mountainous and multiday Tour of Switzerland and finished first in the time trial in the Olympic Games and world road-race championships, Fabian Cancellara picked up the nickname Spartacus for his power and combativeness.

Fabian Cancellara wins the Tour of Flanders: The Swiss added the Ronde van Vlaanderen to his long list of honours, which include three Tour de France prologue wins and victory in Paris-Roubaix and Milan-San Remo, with a superb solo success in the 258-kilometre cobbled classic.

Bumps and bergs of the Tour of Flanders: Flanders never fails to show a true spectacle, and this year, Swiss man-beast Fabian Cancellara (Team Saxo Bank) slayed all, adding the Ronde van Vlaanderen "art" to his mantelpiece of a '06 Paris Roubaix cobblestone and the '08 Milan San Remo "glassware".

Eisel's big day at Flanders affected by crashes: Bernhard Eisel started the Tour of Flanders in the form of his life after winning Gent-Wevelgem last week, but crashes and having to chase at the wrong time in the race meant the HTC-Columbia leader finished in 18th place, 2:35 down on winner Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank).

Devolder's season gamble doesn't pay off: Stijn Devolder had the chance to follow the footsteps of legendary Italian rider Fiorenzo Magni by winning the Tour of Flanders three times in a row, however, the Belgian rider didn't manage to pull off the third win. Neither did his teammate Boonen, who came short of winning his own third Ronde after Fabian Cancellara rode away on the Kapelmuur.

MIllar finds his calling in Flanders: Around thirty metres beyond the finish line of the Tour of Flanders, David Millar (Garmin-Transitions) stopped and almost slithered off his bike and onto the road. He made it to the verge, just, but he was virtually prostrate as he refueled and reflected on his best ever performance in a major Classic, and a courageous one at that, given the calibre of the two riders who were up the road when he launched a late, lone pursuit.

Boonen accepts his fate in Flanders: Belgian champion Tom Boonen felt he was an equal match in strength for Fabian Cancellara in the Tour of Flanders today, yet for the second time in a week, he found himself unable to stay on the Swiss champion's wheel. Once the gap opened on the Kapelmuur between the two riders with less than 20km to go, Boonen realized he didn't stand a chance of winning his third career title and had to settle for second place.

2010 Tour of Flanders Preview: Punishment on the Pavé: This Sunday’s Tour of Flanders will mark the second Classic of the 2010 season and, like Milan-Sanremo, the list of possible winners is long and distinguished. Armstrong Risks Rainy Cobbled Roads: Lance Armstrong cracked his collarbone in a warm-up race last year, setting back his preparation for the Tour de France. The Texan clearly hasn't learned a thing. On Sunday, he plans on racing in the Tour of Flanders. (Cool people call it the "Ronde van Vlaanderen.") The near-century-old race goes over steep, cobblestoned roads that would be uncomfortable in a Humvee. Add the strong likelihood of rain in Belgium this time of year and it becomes just about the most dangerous thing a professional cyclist could do. "Why bother? Ask me after the cobbled stage in this year's tour," Mr. Armstrong said via Twitter.

Belgians from Flanders would be very offended if you'd tell them that the language they speak is Dutch. In fact, Dutch is dialect of Flemish. Similar to British and American English. It's English, not American. But there is American version of it.

I've read twice, already, that Cancellara is targeting Flanders this year. If he doesn't break his chain and figures out how to outfox Quickstep, then he might win the race.

Not sure what Devolder's form is but I suspect he will not be allowed to ride away from the field as he has the last two years. Boonen and Pozzato marked each other out of the race last year so should be interesting to see how they approach the race this year. I think Maaskant and Flecha could be lively outsiders.

Thanks for the info, I have updated the introduction ;)

After Saturday's victory in Harelbeke Cancellara is now widely considered as number one favorite. He's in top form, that's clear, but the race is long and unpredictable. Anything can happen... Broken chain for example. And I'm not sure that Boonen will let anyone between him and Cancellara this time.
What puzzles me the most is Devolders form. He hasn't shown anything so far, but he's (double) defending champion. Similar situation was last year when he didn't show nothing special in weeks before De Ronde, but managed to defend the title. Convincingly I have to notice.
This year Boonen wears national champion's jersey and we all know that Belgians would be delighted to see again their national champion on the top spot of the race's podium. Quickstep is the team whose main objectives in season are positioned in first two weeks in April. They will be hard to beat with three strong cards (Chavanell is the third card) and experience they've got.
Pozzato will have to change tactics from last year, it didn't bring him the result he wanted. But this time he can't rely on his sprinting ability against Boonen. Boonen looks like he restored his sprinting form. So, Pozzato will have to try something before the finish line.
That won't be easy because, besides Cancellara, there will be Gilbert and Flecha with similar approach.
While Flecha showed his form on Saturday, situation with Gilbert isn't that clear. I can't say he's not in form, he performed well in recent races, but it wasn't enough to get a victory for his team and that pressure can harden his legs even more.
If Eisel can keep with previously mentioned riders till the finish line, he will be on the podium for sure. Otherwise, Columbia will play on someone else.
Liquigas, as a team, is showing great form so far. Willems, Bennati and Chichi will have to make good plan in order to fight for the victory. The key is to determine who will mark whom. If they play that right - they'll have a man on the podium.

I really like this race... It's tradition, euphoria and passion amongst cyclists and fans which follow it.

Edit:
I've forgotten to mention one rider - Haussler.
He was emphasising that this race is his main objective this season. He was very disciplined during the past winter and had good form. Problems he had during early season don't go in his favor. It's possible to pull great performance on a day despite all problems, but it is maybe to much to expect. Lots of riders are targeting this race.

Looks like Haussler is out.

Yes, he's out. It must be huge blow for him. He intended to subordinate the whole season to this race.
Another one who's subordinating his season to this race is Devolder and some people aren't happy with that. It doesn't bother him, in fact he's very confident and seems like he has a plan for Cancellara. Devolder Defies Critics' Barbs | Cyclingnews.com
As I mentioned, Quickstep is team to beat.
I'm really looking forward to Sunday and Saxo's response.
Other teams could see their chance in this Quickstep - Saxo trickery.

My pick is going to be an outsider... Ivanov. Won Amstel last year, seasoned professional. If he follows the important moves he could spring a surprise on some of the favorites. Greg Van Avermaet to bring the bunch home.

Odds of me having picked successfully are pretty much 0 though :p. Now I just have to find a TV channel in Africa that shows something other than soccer.

Reports are saying that Ivanov has diarrhea since last week. His team mate Pozzato is in problems too, he's got flu.
Maybe they're bluffing. I wouldn't be surprised.

There's only a handful of riders that can win this. I reckon Devolder is keeping his powder dry for this one!

Will any websites be doing live coverage?

Get a vid feed from steephill, justin, cyclingfans etc. For a big race it is usually easy to find coverage.

I think Devolder forgot to load his gun this season, and Lefevre is not too happy about it. Boonen will be the man for Quickstep. I think Cancellara takes this; it's his major goal for the season.

Yeah, they won't have anyone ghey to look at.
Nooo...
It's not ghey, it's metro-sexual. Andy gave him the lead for excuse.
Do you think he'd have nothing else to show on the road?

... Haussler looks more like he'd have fun pounding pave. Still trying to find a language where pave means backside.

My favorites (probably wrong as always):
*****Boonen
****Cancellara, Flecha
***Breschel, Gilbert
**Devolder, Hushovd, Nuyens
*Eisel, Bennati, Ivanov, Gasparotto

I'm wondering, how deep will be Cancellara's charge, if he is in the leading group after Kapelmuur?
Just inside 1 kilometer, I think. Any deeper will be caught.
