Seems the hook bead tires are much more prone to pinch flats than the V-shaped straight rim tires. Is this just an aberation I experienced or is there a reason fpr this ?

It's an aberration. There are multiple factors involved, most of
which have to do with rim width, tire width, tire pressure, and hazard
profile. Whether the rim is hooked should have zero bearing in and of
itself.
