Does anyone know of a place that sells good quality 27 x 1 inch tyres in
the sydney area. I can't find them anywhere, and there HAs to be someone
around who imports them I am considering getting several sets, putting
them aside just to keep my bike original, and just getting another bike
in a 700 as my daily rider.

Cheers, Claire

Any reason you can't use the standard, common 27x1¼" tyres?
Is your frame clearance really that bad? Its the same bead size, you
know. You'll just need to recalibrate the speedo slightly.

Thanks for that Mike.

Yes, its the same bead size, but my concerns are: Adding rolling weight
to my wheelset. Altering the resonance of my bike. Road holding. And
finally personal preference.

The bike is old, but it was high end in its day, and you can definitely
notice a difference when you put good tyres on it in terms of addered
rolling weight, resonance and road holding. So, why not put good tyres
on a high end bike espceially considering that the bike performs better
when fitted with good tyres?

I know you can get good qaulity tyres in a 27 x 1 but they are hard to
come by. Perhaps their is a specialist dealer out there somewhere. That
is eesentially what my question is about.

Cheers, Claire

I'm not sure about the 1", but we definately got something
like 27" x 2-ish cm tyres about 12 months ago for our
"Road-King" 3-speed. However this was from the local
bike shop, which has since closed.

It didn't seem to be an extrordinary thing, they had a half-dozen
of 'em. I'll go have a look in the shed and find out the
make & correct dimensions. (Hmm, can't remember if this
bike is still at my mum's place, might have to wait until the
weekend).

Here in Melbourne, 'Bikecorp' handles the 27 inch 'Vee Rubber' tyres,
wholesale only. Most any bike shop would take your deposit and order
some in - plus they should have some catalogues from the suppliers- you
should be able to choose what you want. These tyres are a bit fat for
you, but very comfortable to ride on. ( A copy of the Michelin World
Tour at half the price).

Then there's the Vittoria range of tyres in 27 inch, gum wall, white
wall, etc, and narrower than the above. You just need to find a bike
shop with better customer service.

By the way, the 27 inch tyres have a Bead Seat Diameter of 630 m.m.,
whereas 700 C tyres have a BSD of 622 m.m.

Good Luck.
