8 speed/9 Speed compatibility

I run an 8 speed set-up. After trashing my old xt rear mech today, I'm looking to get a new one. However everything from LX upwards is now 9 speed. Are they compatible? (if not why not, 'cos surely its the shifters that determine how much cable is pulled through?).

Yer right, it's the shifters in this case.
