8 speed DA hubs with Chorus 10 speed system

Okay, so I'm trying to convert to a Campy 10 speed Chorus set up on the
cheap. Can I use my existing wheels built with 8 speed Dura Ace hubs and
just swap out the 8 speed Shimano cassette with an American Classic 10 speed
converter cassette for my new Campy system and be set? Do the wheels have
to be re-dished? Do I have to break down and buy a 10 speed hub and have
the rear wheel rebuilt? I've installed the American Classic cassette on my
existing wheels and it doesn't look like there's sufficient space between
the innermost cog and the spokes to allow the derailleur room to avoid
hitting the spokes.

Thanks for any light you can shed on the problem.

A 10 sp Ultegra cassette works fine. If you insist on a conversion
casssette, I've had good luck with the IRD.

We've done Chorus Ten conversions on Shimano 8/9 hubs using
the American Classic cassette to great success. It shifts
well, costs about the same as any other cassette and
obviates a rear wheel rebuild.

If your DA hubs are any except the first generation, i.e.,
if there is a cassette lockring thread on your hub, the
American Classic is the way to go for an inexpensive
conversion while you plan your new wheels with Campagnolo's
completely superior new design hubs. If you have any
interest in mechanical things, you'll just fall in love the
first time you open one.
