  1. Best I can tell, the following setup should work. Any dissenters?

    XT M760 Crank
XTR M950(?) Rapid Rise 8-speed Rear Der.
    XT M750 Front Der.
SRAM PG-850 Power Glide II 11-32 8-speed Cassette
    SRAM PC-68 Power Chain 8-speed
    XT M750(?) Combination Shifter/Brake Levers

I'm rebuilding/upgrading my 1998 GF Big Sur and I want to keep the 8 speed
setup. And holy cow is it hard to get XTR 8-speed stuff!

Any comments/advice on the remainder of the rebuild also appreciated. I'm a
200lb rider looking to have a lightish and sturdy hardtail that will see a
fair amount of street use riding to light to moderate northeastern x-country
trails. No sick downhill, drops, jumps, trickery, tomfoolery, etc.

    Race Face Deus Headset
    Thompson Elite Stem
    Marzocchi 120mm MX Comp w/ETA
Avid Single Digit SL Ti V-Brakes
    Shimano M-540 Wheelset
    Candy SL Pedals
    Easton EC70 Flat Carbon Bar
    Sette Ergo Carbon Bare Ends
    Sette or Easton Carbon Seatpost

    Not decided on:
    Grips
    Cables
    Skewers
    Tires

I went retro on my fs and ht..

    XT cranks
8 Spd SRAM cassette & chain
Twistshifteron front, SRAM clicker on rear

You have to shag somebody to get XTR 8 speed these days...

Good article on devo'ing to an 8 speed in JD's fav mag!
http://www.mbaction.com/homefullimg.jpg and also the previous month's
    edition.

Also read an article not too long ago on a 9 speed to was converted to an 8.
The guy just took off the 11 ring and placed a spacer in back of the
cassette (XTR) and got rid of the granny for a better chainline.
