9/10 Speed Compact Cranks with 7 spd drivetrain

I am finally starting my long awaited bike upgrade. I have a '86 Trek
that last go-around I added 7 speed hub and cassette and bar end
shifters. To start the upgrade, I purchased a FSA Gossamer compact
crank, designed for 9/10 speed drives. Are the newer chainrings
backwards compatible with 7speed hyperglide chain/cassette? Can I
upgrade just the cassette and chain to 10 speed without a new hub (using
only 7 or 8 of a 10 speed cassette)? I am doing this upgrade in steps
since hurricanes and other unplanned expenses have taken a serious toll
on my fun money budget and cut short plans to go Campy in one push.

Thanks,

bigsky

Yes, w/o problem, no need to use a 10s chain. match the chain to the cogset
spacing, the front doesn't care.
