Possible by re-spacing the cassette for 9sp using 8sp spacers and then using the derailleur's limit
screw to disable shifter's 1st position. Existing 8sp chain will be fine.
Shimano 9sp cassettes fit 8sp hubs so might as well convert straight to 9sp if/when can afford
cassette & chain. Existing derailleurs and chainrings should be ok.

well known trick use 9 sped levers but atatch cable to wrong side of derailuer bolt. viola! works
with 8 speed cassete - JumpZkid
