A good source of 27 inch tyres

I recently built a flat bar road bike with 27 x 1/4 tyres, figuring they were approximately the same as those fatter tyres on the modern hybrid bikes.

However on a trip to 2 LBS, one of them had a single 27 inch tyre buried somewhere in the back of the store, the other had a whole pile of specialised tri-sports. Both of them were the heavy training tyres.

Anyone know where to get decent lightweight 27" tyres?

Not in NZ. Hubby bought a couple of Serfas brand 27x1 1/4 tyres from a bike shop in Canberra that had a surprisingly good stock.

However, he has since gone to 700x28.

Why did you go for a size which is rapidly becoming obsolete?
 
If you contact Apollo NZ, the agents for AirPro, they have 27" tyres.
 
It's an old 12 Speed Healing. Might simply ditch it and buy a European 12 speed with 700C tyres.

You sure 700C wouldn't fit it? Of course, you'd need new wheels, but if the clearances are there, it is do-able.

Hubby did this to a 1984 Miyata 610 which originally came with 27x 1 1/8.
 
700C will not fit.

In Australia, you can buy low quality 27 inch road tyres at K-mart.

Just curious Mike, but why won't 700C fit? The radius difference is 4mm (700C is smaller than 27")

The main problem would be whether the brake calipers have enough adjustment to accommodate the wheels. So are you saying that the brakes on the Healing can't be adjusted that far?

As a matter of fact I just had a look at Lakehaven Kmart, $9.99 for a 27 x 1. 1/4 Heng Sang?? marketed by mongoose pumps to 90psi. Another marketed by Dunlop, made in Thailand, $16.99 85 psi gum wall. I'd say "low quality" for sure, but why can't a reasonable/ high quality 700c tyre cost say $30

I think Matagi does realise 700c wont fit 27" rims, because her other post states "Of course, you'd need new wheels"
 
We are all talking the same thing.

yes 700c won't fit a 27" wheel. 700c wheels will fit a 27" frame, but you will probably have to replace the brakes.

Continental used to make a 27" tire ... maybe, they still do. Ask your LBS if they can order some for you.

The Australian Conti agent does not bring in the 27" tyres and at the time my husband was looking, none of the overseas online stores had them in stock. This was one of the reasons he went to 700C. Maybe the NZ agent is a little more enlightened - I certainly hope it isn't the same person because then your only hope for 27" Conti tyres is online ordering.

And Mike, he will not necessarily need to change the brakes when going from 27" to 700C. The deciding factor will be whether or not the existing brakes have sufficient adjustment (4mm) in them to accommodate the smaller radius.

I bought some cheap ones from K mart but the bike is only used for riding up to the shops which are 2k away.

If you just want cheap 27x1&1/4 tyres, any LBS in Aus or NZ can order in Duro. :rolleyes: I thought you wanted some quality.

I got away with not changing my brakes, but the pads were right at the very bottom.
 
Well, all things considered, I might simply work on another frame.

Both the fork and the frame will need cold-setting for 700C after a quick test. I'm also looking forward to modern brake levers and callipers. The Shimano Tourney ones on it are horrible, even compared after sawing off the extension levers.

I've bought a nice 14 speed Diamondback, clean 4130 frame with 700C tyres that I'm looking forward to making a hybrid. Only $50NZ!
 
You might want to give Abbotsford Cycles here a call ... the guy I got my 27 1/4 inch bike from swears by them. I haven't replaced the tyres yet, so I'd be interested to know how it goes.

What sort of frame? If it's steel and the rear dropouts are the old 126mm, you should be able to pull them apart to 130mm sufficiently without the need for cold setting - or are you trying to go to 135mm?

Why is the seat so low, is it adjusted for you?
