In article said:Today I rode for 68 miles without: a helmet, a puncture, an altercation with a
motorist/motorcyclist/pedestrian or a crash. Furthermore on reaching my destination i was able to
get a ticket for me and the bike on the next available train to Leeds. On reflection the only
thing I've suffered from in a 1000 miles of cycling this summer is two punctures, is this typical
or should I start training to be a 'cycling victim'.
I used to cycle to one of Harrogate's rail stations, first Burley Park, then Pannal, then Weeton, as
my fitness improved before just cycling all the way to Leeds. The train become pretty unusable in
rush hour, though at the time Arriva were having a lot of problems with reliability in general, so
doing it on foot was too unreliable for many.
I used the train recently, and the conductor seemed quite pleased to see a bike, even moved people
down to make space for me, though told me that I could still expect difficulties doing the journey
regularly.
Borrowing the recumbent tandem, I generally noticed that drivers were friendly, except for one
morning when the schools returned and everyone seemed to be in a mad congested rush and upset that
someting a meter wide was travelling too slowly for them down the road. The mad overtakes were
pointless, as in the sections in question, I caught up with them shortly after they'd overtaken.
On the positive side, I had drivers stop to let me cross on the A61 reverse-triangle-bout near that
20mph bridge on the Warf, and in return I pulled in to the layby and let the one that let me out in
front of him past.
I've probably done 1000 miles this summer if I add it all up, generally lots of small rides
which all adds up. Its mostly gone without problem. I think a lot depends on where and when you
ride, and how.
