President George W. Bush’s military record is a shameful display of draft evasion, criminal conduct, and eventually desertion while using his father’s connections to unethically gain advantage over other people and escape criminal prosecution. Vice President **** Cheney used every trick he could to evade the draft and military service altogether. Their evasion of service has significant ramifications in their execution of the Iraq War. Americans should demand more in their president and vice president.

After finishing college, Bush used his father’s connections to evade service in the Vietnam War by jumping over a huge waiting list to get a pilot slot in the National Guard, after numerous other applicants who were much more qualified and who had much higher aptitude test scores were rejected. Then Bush refused a direct and lawful order from a superior officer to take a physical exam, but used his father’s connections to avoid criminal prosecution by court-martial for disobeying a lawful order. Bush obviously refused to take the physical exam because it tested for illegal drug abuse and he would have failed it due to heavy drug abuse for which he was never caught as far as we know. Finally, after failing to take the physical, Bush went AWOL in the National Guard, but again used his father’s connections to avoid criminal prosecution for being a deserter.

As a former military combat officer, I know that in the military, we believe in leadership by example. What kind of example does Bush set for American troops as commander in chief?

Compare Bush’s disgraceful military record to the military record of his last opponent for the presidency. Senator John Kerry (D-MA) could have used his privileged background to evade service in Vietnam like Bush or like Cheney, who finagled five draft deferments. But Kerry volunteered to serve, even though he didn't believe the war was worthwhile, because he knew if he didn't go, another young American would be sent in his place. After giving a college graduation speech in which he denounced America’s policies in Vietnam, Kerry volunteered to serve in the U.S. Navy and then requested duty in Vietnam as a swift boat officer, which was one of the most dangerous combat duties there. During his tour of duty in Vietnam, Kerry demonstrated exceptional valor while leading combat troops into battle. He won a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Then when Kerry came back home after two tours of duty, he fought to end the war as the most prominent spokesman for Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Kerry served America with tremendous courage, honor, and distinction during two tours of duty, and to this day, he still has shrapnel left in a leg from his battle wounds.

While Kerry and Vice President Al Gore, Bush’s 2000 opponent for the presidency, volunteered to serve in Vietnam, Bush spent the war, by all accounts, boozing it up and getting stoned, too. Many brave men from Bush’s hometown of Midland, Texas, such as Private First Class Paulino Lopez, Staff Sergeant Kendell Cutbirth, and Captain Robert Zonne, served instead of Bush and died in Vietnam. Bush stayed home, supportive of the Vietnam War, but too afraid to fight for his country. Instead he decided to spend the war in a drug and alcohol induced haze.

Like Bush, there doesn’t seem to be much that Cheney wouldn’t do to avoid service in Vietnam. Cheney applied for and received four draft deferments for being a student at Casper College and University of Wyoming between 1963 and 1965. On August 7, 1964, Congress approved the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which greatly increased Cheney's chance of being drafted, but 22 days later, he married Lynne. At the time, married men were exempt from being drafted. Hence if student deferments were to become disallowed, his marriage might still decrease his chances of being drafted. But the war kept demanding more troops, and the number of people eligible for the draft rapidly expanded. On May 19, 1965, Cheney was reclassified with the most dangerous draft status. On July 28, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson announced that the number of people drafted would double. Then on October 26, 1965, the Selective Service announced that it would start drafting married men with no children. Married men with children were still exempt from the draft. Exactly nine months and two days later, Cheney’s first daughter, Elizabeth, was born. During the first trimester of Lynne’s pregnancy, Cheney applied for and received another draft deferment. Altogether, Cheney finagled five draft deferments.

This isn’t what Cheney recalled in 1989 during a Senate confirmation hearing to be secretary of defense to the first President Bush. Cheney was questioned about his failure to serve and responded, “I would have obviously been happy to serve had I been called.” Cheney admitted in the same year to a Washington Post reporter that he “had other priorities in the '60s than military service.” Cheney said he had “other priorities” than military service, but many brave men from Cheney’s hometown of Casper, Wyoming, such as Specialist 4 Richard Sweeney, Gunnery Sergeant Robert Grove, and Captain Carlton Holland, served instead of Cheney and died in Vietnam. Cheney was busy with his “other priorities” while supporting the war in which he was too lily-livered to fight.

Cheney’s last opponent for the vice presidency, Senator John Edwards (D-NC), was too young to serve in Vietnam until the war was winding down and the draft had ended. He can be faulted for not voluntarily enlisting in the military to serve in Vietnam when he turned 18, especially if he wants to be commander in chief, but at least he didn’t evade the draft like Bush and Cheney. Also, unlike Bush and Cheney, Edwards didn’t support a war in which he was too frightened to fight.

Kerry opposed the Vietnam War, but volunteered for two tours of duty, requested duty in Vietnam, and dodged enemy fire aboard a swift boat in the Mekong Delta. Bush and Cheney, on the other hand, were supportive of the Vietnam War, but used every dirty trick they could find to avoid serving in it. Then they had the gall to criticize Kerry’s commitment to national defense. Moreover, Bush and Cheney stood by while their surrogates distorted and skewered Kerry’s honorable and courageous service in Vietnam.

Referring to Cheney's criticism of Kerry's commitment to national defense, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), another Navy veteran, responded, “When I hear this coming from **** Cheney, who was a coward, who would not serve during the Vietnam War, it makes my blood boil. Those of us who served and those of us who went in the military don't like it when someone like a **** Cheney comes out and he wants to be tough. Yeah, he'll be tough. He'll be tough with somebody else's blood, somebody else's kids. But not when it was his turn to go.”

The Republican leadership is nearly devoid of war veterans, and yet they are the greatest proponents of staying the course in the Iraq War. Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), a World War II veteran, defines a chickenhawk as “having the shriek of a hawk but the backbone of a chicken.” “We know who the chickenhawks are,” he said on the Senate floor. “They talk tough on national defense and military issues and cast aspersions on others, but when it was their turn to serve, they were AWOL from courage. Now the chickenhawks are squawking about Senator Kerry.” The Republican Party, a refuge for chickenhawks, could be called a chicken coop.

...

With reckless abandon, Bush taunted the Iraqi resistance fighters saying, “Bring 'em on!” It’s very easy for him to say this when he has never had to face hostile fire and when he unethically evaded service in the war fought by his generation. Bush and Cheney say that Democrats favoring a timetable for withdrawal of American troops believe in “cut and run,” as if they are the courageous ones for staying the course, but they aren’t among the troops facing the prospect of death every day in Iraq. Bush and Cheney were the ones who cut and run when their country needed them in Vietnam.

...

The president of the United States is supposed to be the commander in chief of the armed forces, not their chickenhawk in chief. Cheney acts as the de facto behind the scenes president on foreign policy. Neither of these chickenhawks in chief have the moral authority to send troops into combat when they were too scared to serve in the war fought by their generation. Bush and Cheney both supported the Vietnam War as long as they didn't have to fight in it. While they evaded service in Vietnam, many other young Americans died in their place. Why would any veteran or member of the military support someone who shirked his duties when he honorably performed or is performing his duties? Why would any citizen support someone with such a disgraceful military record? How could anybody reward cowardice over courage? Through their actions and words, Bush and Cheney essentially said that if their country needed them, don't come calling on them, but send someone else in their places.

Now Bush and Cheney think they can lead the armed forces and the country. Wake up, America. If they didn't have the courage to serve, how can they claim to have the courage to lead?

According to a flash report I heard today, it turns out Bush saved a group of campers from certain death by actually engaging a crocodile and wrestling it to a standstill. Bush actually pinned the croc down in an act of heroics and saved lives. The repubs are now going to release the testimony of those he saved.
I'd never have thought it possible as he doesn't look capable of such a feat.

1st District Candidate Asks Kerry to Cancel Visit

Des Moines, October 31, 2006 (AP) - 1st District congressional candidate Bruce Braley has canceled a campaign event scheduled later this week with Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, saying that the senator's recent comments about the Iraq war were inappropriate.

Braley, a Democrat, is running against Republican Mike Whalen in Iowa's 1st District congressional race -- a contest considered to be one of the most competitive House races in the country.

Braley's appearance with Kerry, the Democrats nominee for president in 2004, was scheduled for Thursday.

Braley spokesman Jeff Giertz says the decision to cancel the event with Kerry was made independently. The decision came as a furor grew over comments Kerry made about the Iraq War Monday.

Speaking at a campaign event in California, Kerry said, "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

The remark has prompted sharp criticism from some Republicans, including President Bush.

Kerry cancels Mankato appearance

MANKATO— The dueling rallies scheduled for Mankato today on behalf of Republican congressman Gil Gutknecht and Democratic challenger Tim Walz lost some of their pizzaz Tuesday night when Sen. John Kerry pulled out of the Democratic rally.

Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the front-runner for the 2008 Republican nomination for president, is the star attraction at a rally at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center for Gutknecht and Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee pulled out of the DFL event, which will still be held, as the result of a controversy over comments he made Monday in California.

Walz communication director Meredith Salsbery said Kerry canceled his visit to keep the focus on the issues and away from Kerry’s comments and McCain’s response.

She wouldn’t comment on whether Walz asked Kerry not to campaign for him, but said the decision was ultimately the senator’s choice.

Both of today’s rallies are free and open to the public and are expected to last about an hour. McCain will be in the East Banquet Hall at the Civic Center. The event begins at 10:10 a.m., but people need to arrive by 9:50 a.m. The doors open at 9:15 a.m. No backpacks or other bags are allowed.

Doors open at MSU’s Taylor Center at 11 a.m. for the Walz event with music by Martin Zellar beginning at 11:15 a.m. The rally begins at noon. Parking around campus is expected to be very limited, but shuttle buses will run starting at 10:30 a.m. from the Madison East Center.

George Bush and **** Cheney have been working overtime (and racking up air miles) to rally conservative stalwarts in the final days before the elections, and on Monday they got a gift from an unexpected source: John Kerry.

As the president was telling the good people of Texas that the Democrats did not want to win in Iraq, his former rival was in California insulting the troops.

Or so Mr Bush and his spokesman would have us believe. And when you review Mr Kerry’s comment, it’s hard to argue:

"You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq," he said, eliciting chuckles from the students. (You can hear his words here.)

The president demanded an apology, and some furious military bloggers also pounced, calling Mr Kerry a disgrace.

Senator Kerry came out swinging in response, saying he had botched a joke aimed at the president - and that he would apologise to no-one for his criticism. But his tough talk reminded me of an old political maxim: If you're explaining, you're losing.

John Kerry clearly thinks he is going to run for president again in 2008. If he doesn’t have jokes funnier than this, he's going to lose again. And in the meantime, he's not doing his party any favours this year.

In this country, it's common for people to congregate outside a court if some misfit or other is being charged with a terrible crime.
What worries me is that these people seem to revel in another human being's downfall. They make a whole day of it, preparing the banners with slogans such as "Hang the Swine!" e.t.c. Then they shout and rave in the street like madmen and act without much dignity.
It's all about moral superiority and what turns these folks on is that they are better than the misfit who's being tried in court.
My view of Bush is he made some serious mistakes but I'm not in a position to be the guy's judge and jury. Besides, the Bible teaches no matter how bad an individual may be, it's wrong to judge unless you yourself are perfect and have never put a foot wrong.
Not that I'm in any way religious. I'm just saying that from a moral point of view you can't set yourself up as a judge and gloat over the downfall and tragedy of somebody else.
I agree that bitterness isn't particularly helpful. I can undestand why people may hate Bush but hate is still a negative emotion.

This post hits home with me.......My girlfriend wanted me to go to the Braley thing tomorrow...... Looks as if the fire is taken away from that show.....However, this is an excellent move by Braley. The midwestern part of the country is not the type of people that Kerry would energize.

I am disappointed to see Gil Gutknecht not get his shot at Kerry.. Gil is a friend of mine. He lived right up the street from me when we were young during his college years. I did work on his parent s house a few years ago.
I have always said that if th edemocrats want to take th ecountry back, they need to eliminate the east coast liberals. Dean, Kennedy, Kerry, and posiibly Gore. The east coast liberals do not have the soul of the Democratics in this country.
Proof is in 2004 when th eelection was handed to them..... and they lost. Now it is more then handed to them again. And if they do not take the mid term election, they need to elimonate Kerry and Dean.....Ask them to immiediatly step down....

Pretty hard to defend these contemptible shitheads, eh boys?

Facts:

1. Bush and Cheney are both cowards that lied repeatedly about their lack of military service.

2. Given their cowardice and dishonesty, neither Bush nor Cheney have any moral authority to send US forces to war.

3. Neither Bush nor Cheney has earned the right to cast aspersions on Kerry or any other honorable war veteran.

In Bush's case, he was a deserter during wartime and could have/should have gotten the death penalty under military regulations.

The tension is rising as the election gets nearer and nearer. Hope you got your bags packed wurm. I think you can use a vacation. :p

And he wasn't allowed to post under any other name?

wurm...... are you going to follow through if this attack does not happen?

Bush & Cheney = Cowards. Contemptible liars.

No, the soldiers, sailors and airmen that President Bush/V President Cheney sent into harm's way STILL SUPPORT THEIR COMMANDER IN CHIEF.

So take your cowardice ASSumption and shove it up your ass, sideways. :D

It's clear what Kerry meant but he put his foot in it. It doesn't look good - that's the problem.
However, I do agree that many soldiers who go to Iraq weren't so well educated and I believe soldiers have always been exploited and used throughout history - paid to do the dirty work and then abandoned.
It's not quite so bad in the U.S. as it is over here, of course. Over here I heard about hundreds of ex-soldiers who served in Iraq, dumped on the streets of London homeless, while we have all these radical Middle Eastern clerics drawing welfare and being housed. Some of these have been accused of terrorism or may have been involved in terrorism.
How must soldiers feel about that?
So, to be frank, when a guy told me some weeks ago he wanted to join the army and was in the process of joining up, I gave him a lecture as to why he shouldn't join.
Myself, no way would I join. My belief is too many soldiers are sent out into chaos and then abandoned by the State. Such being the case, a war run by cowardly politicians such as Blair and co is an unwinnable one and there are people in the army who would agree with me.
U.K. soldiers have had a gut-full of being let down or prosecuted in courts.
I guess Kerry was saying, "Don't be used by the Government!"

Sorry........I totally disagree with your post. Kerry has always had it in for the military. His disdain for it is real evident in the Congressional hearings he participated in when he came home from Viet-Nam. His slip up was more then a joke....

As far as the soldiers being uneducated???? Way wrong. I ran a pub with university students for several years. The boys I knew who went to Irag were college educated and very sharp individuals. The local unit was made up of these type of guys. A friend of mine did a 14 month stint over there. He has 2 degrees, and a graduate degree, and is thinking of applying to law school.....

This situation is where the soldiers are joining, unlike Viet-Nam where they did not give you a choice. The poor back then did not have the chance the rich boys had of avoiding the draft.

*****Kerry is the new "wurm." He is angry and spouts off things and gets angrier because no one listens.

99.9% of enlistees in the combined US armed forces have high school diplomas. Beats the general public by at least 10 percentge points.

Sure, back when LBJ was President and we had an abomination for Sec. of Defense, we had very low standards for draftees. But that was back in the 1960s...

Furthermore, 68% career non-commissioned officers (upper enlsited) in combat arms HAVE BACHELOR'S DEGREES.

Apart from the sad fact he looks a bit like a cross between Lurch and an undertaker, I felt John Kerry ran a great campaign. His argument about Bush rushing to war seems to have been proven, now Bush seems to be contemplating a withdrawel.
However, the remarks Kerry made have obviously damaged him and he slipped up big time. I figure what he meant was troops have usually always been used as fodder by politicians and then you have cases like Lyndie England.
I mean, let's face facts, Lyndie England wasn't the brightest spark in town and was betrayed by those above her when they sold her down the river.
Miss England was exploited by her superiors who noted she wasn't quite bright enough to question what she was being urged to do - i.e. humiliate POW's.
Personally, I've got nothing against fighting a war when you're up against psychotic despots such as ****** who are invading other countries with a powerful army. However, I think too may troops are being used by greedy politicians, many of whom could care less about their welfare or mental health.

As bad as the communists here hate Bush, just think of how lucky we are not to have 'Lurch' in the White House! That idiot stands for everything wrong with the left in America today. Face it, he just blew any chance (which was very slim anyway), for the Dems power grab of the House and Senate with his 'joke' aimed at the military.

It was one of those big mistakes you can make in public life. I know what Kerry meant but the troops in Iraq won't see it that way. He handed Bush a big card to play.
The Democrats need Hilary Clinton. I think this woman could stand a decent chance - even Madonna was saying on T.V. how she would like to see Hilary as the next President.
At the end of the day, Kerry shouldn't be in this position. He's the one who's been proven right over Iraq but that was a very stupid mistake he made when he insulted the army as dumb-wits.

Disdain, not mistake! Madonna's opinion? What, other than entertaining some people, has her opinion got to do with anything? Hillary is a two faced **** like her BJ loving husband. In my opinion she is worse than Bill due to the mere fact she is not divorced from him.
