does anyone have an opinion on Ohtaki or Vivalo? any reason one might be superior to the other?

I have a chance to get a really good deal on one or the other. (it is a LONG story) but I really apreciate any advice or information about either of these framebuilders. Thank you.

Hello!! Old Breadbutt
This is Tomity from Tokyo Japan

I inform you of about Ohtaki and Vivalo NJS frame.
It has neither Web site.

Ohtaki has the atelier in Tokyo.
It doesn't produce there in a small atelier recently.
Because,Ohtaki frame is unusual existence.

Vivalo has the atelier in Kobe near Osaka city
A lot of frames are produced in the atelier here.
It has the painting factory, and this atelier is beautiful painting
and a reputation.

It's my opinion
I like Ohtaki!! Because,It's beautiful frame works than Vivalo one
I recommend Ohtaki to be bought for you.

Please tell me your long story about it's frame deal

best regards

Tomity san,
hontouni doumo aigatou!
本当にどうもありがとうございます。

My friend Miki is from Japan and visiting right now. He doesn't know much about bicycles, was gracious enough to check on some used keirin frames for a friend and I. his email mentioned two frames Vivalo and Ohtaki. Both used but in good condition, both in my size. I don't know much about the frames, but the price is very good. I've been riding an IRO for months, for the price, it is a great frame for riding in the city, but I am excited to own a proper track frame and to ride it at the San Jose Velodrome.

thank you again for your insight, your opinion is respected.

Hi Tomity, I have just read your posting about track frames. I visit Japan about twice a year and I am looking for a good traditional steel track frame. Would you say that Nagasawa is the best builder in Japan or can you recommened someone else. Thank you for your help.

I know you were asking Tomity, but just to throw in my 2cents, Nagasawa is considered by many to be one of the best framebuilders in the world.

Thanks Old Breadbutt, thats good enough for me. It is getting harder and harder to find good builder who still build track frames in steel in the traditional style. Even living in England, there are less and less good hand built steel frames about, the same seems to apply to Italy. Carbon and Aluminium seem to rule, Particularly in track frames.

a freind of mine who runs a bike shop gets a lot of custom frames from Nagasawa and Pegoretti. He recently got a steel Pegoretti track bike (custome made for him) that is simply amazing to ride. It's not luged but welded, some kind of high tech steel that they can run thin. so the tubing is oversized in some areas like the chainstays, making it incredibly stiff. it's super light too. it's not as pretty as a nagasawa, but I've never ridden anything like it.
He was telling me that Nagasawa and Pegoretti talk to each other all the time and have great respect for one and other as framebuilders. he said that each would probably claim the other as the worlds greatest builder.

I realize I'm bumping an ancient thread, but I was wondering if the old Miyata steel track frames were NJS-approved?

Hello!! tinydr-san

Do I speak this forums for the first time with you?
If it is so,Naice to meet you

The NJS frame approval was removed to MIYATA frame ten years or more ago. (I do not know an accurate date.)
Therefore, MIYATA has not been approved now.

Do you have MIYATA(back side of B.B.:NJS stamped)track frame?
If you have it, it becomes a very valuable frame.

Let's me know your MIYATA's question story!!

Tomity

Thanks Tomity!

This is the first time we've spoken... it's nice to make your acquaintance.

That was very helpful info, sadly my Miyata trackframe doesn't have the NJS stamp; just the frame size and serial #. It's just as well, I used it as a work-bike as a messenger, so it's been beat on pretty badly. Oddly enough, I got the frame around the time Miyata lost NJS-approval ... that was also about the same time that Miyata stopped importing bikes to the US.

Anyway, just a plain-old "STB" teammiyata track frame, I enjoy it.

Thanks again!

:D Tim

Cool, thanks Tomity, I'll check out the translation...

Sorry, STB = Splined Triple Butted tubing...

I'll post some pics soon, I keep being lazy... it's not much to look at in its current state... although, even with it's messed up paint job there's still something special-looking about a track bike.

hello everyone!
i'm from Poland, have You heard about polish framebuilder Orlowski who's frame received in 2006 and 2007 japanese keirin association certificate?

http://www.rakuten.co.jp/medalist/
Hi Tomity,

You answered some questions for me a couple of years ago, thank you, but now I have a few more things I need to know about NJS.

I bought a Kiyo Miazawa frame recently and want to build it up with all/mostly NJS parts. I have Suntour Superbe Cranks and Wheelset and the Kiyo has Suntour dropouts. I will drill the fork and add a front brake so that I can train on it. But I would like it to be as close to NJS as possible.

My questions...

I want to buy a Nitto NJS seatpost that will accept the rails of my Selle Italia Flyte saddle. The rails are more narrow for Keirin style saddles. Which one should I buy to fit my saddle rail width? Or should I go all out for a Japanese style saddle?

What are the proper NJS style handlebar grips? I have Nitto bars 125AA and will add them to a 90 or 100cm Jaguar stem. So there is not too much "drop" for an old guy on a track bike. But I still want it to be as authentic as possible...even with the front brake.

Thank you,
rj

Hello!! How are you? litespeedy
It is after a long time to talk with you before.

I'm fine and keep still racing.

Answer 1
There is a size matched to two kinds of of width of the rail in Nitto NJS seatpost. (normal size:44mm,nallow size:30mm)

NJ-SP72-W44 > It suits for Selle Italia Flyte saddle.
http://shop.yumetenpo.jp/goods/d/uemura-cycle.com/g/NITTO_NJ-SP72_44/index.shtml

NJ-SP72-W30 > It suits for NJS Japanese Keirin nallow saddle.
http://shop.yumetenpo.jp/goods/d/uemura-cycle.com/g/NITTO_NJ-SP72_30/index.shtml

When you buy NITTO NJS seatpost W44, you can use Selle Italia Flyte saddle.

Answer 2
"What are the proper NJS style handlebar grips?"
Most Keirin rider uses the grip made of rubber.

"I have Nitto bars 125AA and will add them to a 90 or 100cm Jaguar stem. So there is not too much "drop" for an old guy on a track bike."

The drop of Nitto bars B-125AA is smaller than that of Nitto bars B-123AA.

Nitto bars B-125AA
D:150mm,R:88mm

Nitto bars B-123AA
D:175mm,R:95mm
http://item.rakuten.co.jp/bebike/b123-s/

Nitto bars B-123AA is used for Keirin rider more than Nitto bars B-125AA.

This brake set doesn't have the necessity for doing drill to front fork.

does anyone have a source for obtaing Giro frames. Their fork crown is set up for drilling. It is cast with hole on inside the fork. I want a Keirin frame that can be drilled in 55cm c to c
Thanks

Hello, does any one heard about Gilmor Special frames?

I found this bike in a flea market 3 years ago. I can't find any info about.
The seat post is Nitto, the rims araya with suzue hubs; suntour Cranks and chainring and campagnolo bolts.
