Advice on selling a high-end road bike

Hi,
I injured myself and won't be riding for about a year, so I'm selling my
2005 Litespeed Ghisallo with Ultegra group.
I don't see much demand for used road bikes in my city so I think the best
option is to sell online but I'm 'afraid' of ebay and paypal.

Is there a reliable escrow service or a way to sell a bike and not get
ripped off?

Thanks a bunch,

Injuries stink but a year passes faster than you might think.

If you like the bike, hold onto it till you can ease back onto it.

If you don't like it, go ahead and sell it but be warned, you usually
take a beating on resale value of used bikes. If you get 50% of the
retail, you'll be lucky, imo.

One thing might be in your favor... If you don't need the cash this
instant, you can wait till you get your asking price.

The other thing that might generate a bit more return is to sell the
parts. Of course, the parts have to be decent to start with. And finally
flog the frame...

The difficulty with selling a whole bike is the smaller market size and
the need to fit the bike. Where as every rider, tall or short, can be a
potential buyer of components.

Does this make sense?

The easiest way is to make sure that you have cash in hand before shipment.
Do you have a PayPal account?

Ask for payment via USPS Money Order. Take it to the local PO prior to
shipment. Very safe.

Hi,
I plan to put in up for sale at (what I consider a) fair price, if it sells
that's great, if not I'll keep it and ride when I'm better.
I have a paypal account but would rather not use them for larger items, I've
heard horror stories. I don't think a buyer would send me cash before I
send the item.

OBS: Does payment via USPS MO provide protection to the buyer also? ie,
can the buyer put conditions on it like I have to ship something that looks
like a bike out before the PO hands the money order to me?

Thanks again,

Yes, in the sense that any fraud involving a USPS MO is a Federal
offense. As a seller, you can feel completely secure; as a buyer, I
would feel pretty confident if I had a detailed description of the item
being offered for sale. Shipping the item via USPS with Delivery
Confirmation makes things even more comfortable for all involved.

No, but see above.

USPS Money Order is good but there is a $750 limit so it will take several.
Also have the Money Orders sent by Espress mail or FedEx.

I believe ebay offers an escrow service, if that will allay some of your
fears.

I bought a bike over eBay and the vendor insisted on PayPal. He sent
the bike when he'd received the money. I was worried, but it went fine.
I sure didn't expect him to send the bike before he had the money! But
I would have arranged to have his legs broken if he didn't send the
bike ;P
