I rode a Trek 7.1, a 7000, a 7100 and the 7.1FX was the best of them. You have to ride them all for yourself. I ended up with a completely different bike(Jamis Coda), but the Treks are great. For your price range the 7000 is a good bike for sure, unless you want to spend $439? Or... Save up to 60% off new Cafe Bikes | Hybrid Bikes Cafe Latte 2010 I almost got one of these. For the price, with free shipping, not bad. Hope this helps.

If you look hard enough you might be able to find a last model year Trek 7.2FX or 7.3FX. Look up on Craigslist too for a used 7.3Fx. I would swear by the 7.3 because it is my commute bike. But then again I am biased. I got the 7.3 brand new for $550+tax. So I would suggest some shopping/bargaining at your LBS.
