Antonio Brivio, founder and chief engineer of Studio AIP introduces their new MEP crank system. A demonstration of the MEP mounting procedure shows the key features of AIP’s unique power meter which allow this self-contained measurement system to measure the pedaling force applied to each crank independently. Machined aluminium crank arms house a network of sensors which collect the raw power data that is then beamed to a smart phone running AIP’s proprietary application via either Bluetooth or ANT+ wireless transmitters located in the right crank. A hollow aluminium axle spins in external BB bearings and holds the rechargeable Li-ion battery which powers the MEP. Once the correct chain ring spider has been selected from the wide range available and bolted in place, the length-adjustable crank arms connect to the axle via a one-way-fit spline creating a precision measurement device easily adaptable to different riders to use on road, track and MTB bikes.

Antonio Brivio explains why AIP chose to use a proprietary application running on a Windows enabled Smart Phone as the MEP rider interface and we are shown some of the information available to MEP users. The three analysis screens of the smart phone application give detailed numerical and graphical displays of current performance data, graphical history of key values and detailed graphs of torque and power throughout a single pedal stroke. The user friendly ‘dashboard’ screen allows riders easy access to the wealth of performance data that the MEP system generates for fast feedback during a ride. Data can be downloaded to MAC or PC for analysis after the ride with in depth pedaling technique data available at user-defined points within the ride to allow technique at key moments to be closely tracked. The MEP software can also integrate GPS information and multimedia files with this data to create an interactive training log.

Highly respected coach and trainer Omar Beltran uses the MEP system to assist his athletes by gathering data and providing live pedaling technique feedback during training sessions. Here we see Omar using the AIP Smartphone to show Vera Carrara data relating torque to pedal position and explaining how her pedaling style must adapt as she switches from road into off-road racing. Omar provides on the spot feedback by quickly downloading data to the MEP software to fine tune the performance of another if his athletes, displaying power contributions of both left and right legs separately to help spot muscular imbalances early, reducing her risk of injury. As Omar guides his athletes towards London 2012 the MEP system will provide valuable insight not provided by other power meters into how his athletes produce and apply power at the pedals, something he is certain will bring them real competitive advantage.

BikeRadar.com | Industry Insider | AIP | Explanation of how the MEP enriches training

By testing bicycles, helicopters and Formula 1 components, Studio AIP have developed a wide variety of highly advanced test protocols. We’ll hear Antonio explain the significance of the traceable calibration each MEP unit undergoes before Marco talks us through the actual process and calibration machine itself. On a custom designed rig each and every MEP crank is subjected to a range of static and dynamic loading before the measured values are compared to the input loads to ensure accurate power and offset readings across all riding conditions. We also get a look at the exhaustive fatigue testing AIP carry out on the MEP system. This heavy duty test machine can apply enormous loads and cycle through a typical loading pattern far faster than could be achieved out on the road, this brutal repeated loading tests system durability and ensures that this precision measuring device is robust as it is accurate.
