Another cyclist attacked..

"POLICE are investigating a daylight robbery which left a cyclist
unconscious.
A 38-year-old from Wrexham was approached by a group of five men as he
walked along the Millennium cycleway and footpath in Kingsway, Newton,
Chester, on Tuesday January 29.

At about 1.35pm it is thought two of the men from the group struck the
victim with an iron bar and a stick. They then escaped with his
bicycle.

Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman Jacqui Hanson said: "The victim was
struck on the head with a stick and what was believed to be an iron
bar causing
him to lose consciousness.

"He came to and got up and ran across the field to some shops where he
phoned the police."

The victim was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital after
suffering a gash to the head.

Police officers interviewed the man in the hospital but he declined to
make a complaint.

Mrs Hanson added: "The matter is being investigated by the Specialist
Investigation Unit now. It is being treated as a robbery."

PC Paul Taylor, Neighbourhood Policing Unit office manager, said: "If
someone states they don't want to make a statement we are still duty
bound to seek further information.

"When someone is attacked by a number of people in a busy place in the
afternoon we need to be on top of it and try to identify the
offenders."

You make a complaint, you suddenly find out that /you/ get fingerprinted,
cheek swabbed and all those other fun things to make the victim feel like a
perp.

Does seem a bit odd. I can't understand how anyone can be content
with being clobbered with an iron bar and having one of your treasured
possessions stolen.

I know the police aren't often that helpful when complaining about
things such as being cut up by cars but this is a bit more serious and
I think the police would be a bit more keen to find the offenders. It
certainly sounds like it from the newspaper article.

Yes - the police (allegedly) need your marks/DNA to eliminate samples taken
from the scene.

Well, that's understandable to some extent. I expect the same might be
done with an allegedly-stolen car that's been involved in an accident.

I agree, and I have to confess that I tend to paint such things in an overly
negative fashion. You have to give your consent in writing to the DNA tests
if you are victim/witness, but I have seen reports that the police use
social engineering techniques to get the signature (e.g. Could you just sign
your statement, here, here and, hold on a second, here....) and in England
and Wales you cannot withdraw your consent to be added to the various
databases once you are on it.
