  1. In October, I asked how to change my gearing (Shimano 105 triple, 30-42-52, 12-25 9-speed) to spin
easier up hills in SE Pennsylvania's rolling terrain. Although I received a number of good ideas,
one suggestion that wasn't made, however, was this: get a new bike! Well, it wasn't easy but I
talked myself into that solution! The new bike will have a Campy Chorus triple, 30-42-53, with a
choice of either 13-26 or 13-29 10-speed in the rear.

What should I consider in deciding which rear gearing to choose? I've printed out the gear ration
charts on Sheldon "Choice is Good" Brown's web site, but I can't discern any clear benefits or
detriments to one over the other, so I'm again seeking the collective wisdom of this group.

By the way, I have begun using my big ring--with my present set-up, I rarely felt I needed that much
power and speed, but I have lately begun riding with some faster riders--and I anticipate using it
more on the new bike. Thanks. --Roy Zipris

If you really needed a lower gear, the granny on the 13-26 isn't much lower than your current one
    (30x26 vs 30x25), so I'd recommend the 13-
    29.

Seems to me you need more range. The 13-29 gives you more range. The 13-26 is only a better choice
if you find that you absolutely need gears more closely spaced; ride your current bike and see how
you feel if you skip a gear (try to use gears that you know are on the other bike, if you can).

I imagine the wider range will be welcome.

  4. Switching from 9 to 10 means the extra cog can be lower without bigger jumps between cogs.
    13/29 yea! Tom

I'll second that. I can't imagine needing closer gaps than my 9 speed 12-25. With its extra cog the
13-29 10 speed would be similar.
