Hi

Experiencing for while now some severe knee pain. It is most evident at top medial kneecap near VM. When i stretch rectus femoris at front of thigh i get a lot of pressure in kneecap but mainly at the top of the kneecap right on the corner laterally (so opposite to where I experience it riding and now standing/walking). I ice knes after ride which helps. I have no idea what the problem is and no amount of research has helped. Anyone experienced either of these symptoms and how did you fix it ?

Cheers for any help.

I went through something similar a few months ago. What worked for me was doing light stretches before riding my bike, sounds redundant but it helped. Also, I adjusted my posture and worked on developing a cycling form that suited me better. During the most intense periods of pain, I didn't ride my bike for a day or 2. I'm knee pain free now.

A couple of things can help you. I've done hot rock therapy. You can do it at home. Just take some stones and place them in a crock pot. Use a spoon to scoop them out and let them cool a bit. Place them on the areas. Do this every day in the morning or whenever. It really relieves the pain.

Take a look at your diet. Cut out chemically processed foods like boxed cereals, junk food, and so forth. The chemicals and processing can actually cause the pain or make an injury worse off. Eat healthy real foods and you will see a difference.

With the knee pain, I would always suggest to have it checked by a specialist. It's better to isolate the problem that way and the best is to determine what's causing it. For arthritic pain, you cannot do anything about it except remedies like hot compress (some others use cold compress) but I don't advise pain relievers. And what if that pain is caused a torn ligament? It would be a great risk to continue with strenuous activities particularly cycling.

PS. I am not a doctor, just voicing what I know on the subject matter based on my experience.

You should get it checked if it is chronic and not going away. It could lead to something more serious. I have this pain on my right foot from running a lot so I've switched to biking to see if it helps a little bit.

If you are experiencing severe knee pain, you should stop cycling immediately as you could be aggravating your condition further. Your knee needs complete rest. Wear a knee brace for support and consult a physiotherapist or an orthopedist and seek medical advice. Icing is a temporary measure alone.

Hopefully, you haven't torn any of your ligaments, but if that be the case, you may require surgical correction. They will take an X-ray of your knee and assess your condition. Don't neglect it further.

When it comes to cycling, my knee pain comes and goes. I don't necessarily have a chronic condition or an injury, but my knees are often the areas on my body that will ache after random rides without a good explanation. I ice and heat my legs around the knees to deal with the soreness, and I might crack out a brace if the pain lasts for too long. I've never dealt with knee pain from cycling more than three or four days, though.

I agree with your advice. Not only in the knee but any unbearable pain should not be neglected and given attention. One rider I know had severe pains in his stomach but his excitement with the recreational tour made him momentarily forget the pains. Arriving in the destination after 2 hours of cycling, he collapsed and was brought to the hospital. It was appendicitis that needed surgery. The doctor said it was good that he was brought to the emergency room at once.

I got hurt in a road accident not too long ago and I hyper extended my knee. It's been rough getting to walk around free since then. I'm just waiting for the cuts and gashes to heal up and then I can apply ice to the whole area. After the swelling goes down I'll start to use heat compression to get the blood flowing again.

I just took a hot shower and my knees feels wonderful, and I didn't have to take any Ibuprofen either.

I'd recommend you get a diagnosis on your knee pain. If it's nothing too serious, you might want to check out a massage therapist or osteopath who specializes in sports injuries. A few years ago I twisted my ankle and strained both wrists when I got hit by a car and crashed onto bitumen. I went to see such a massage specialist who worked on my tendons and muscles for 6 weeks before everything became good again. I didn't need any drugs or other conventional treatments.

Knees are a really complex area, I'd strongly recommend visiting an osteopath, they have done wonders for me!

Thanks for the advice all. I am still struggling along and no physio etc seems to get to the bottom of it. On the plus side, the exercises i have been given (by said physio etc) have really improved the strength of my backside

If it's got to the point where the pain is excruciatingly painful and it's giving you problems I think no amount of research on your end can help you unfortunately and that's when you seek medical attention and a professional opinion. When you do get better and riding on the saddle again make sure to stretch before rides and position the seat higher or lower enough to get the full extension while you pedal because if you're peddling incorrectly it could mess up your knees

I would also suggest that you consult a physician for your condition. But it seems like you already did. Is the pain still the same as before or has it lessened now?
