Personal preference and also type of cycling.

Double-sided SPD pedals and shoes with recessed cleats are good for
beginners as they're easy to use, practical and inexpensive; also useful for
casual/utilitarian/touring use for all cyclists. Some other systems are
equally good but tend to be more expensive. I find Look pedals with racing
shoes more comfortable and efficient on longer rides. There are many other
    systems as well.

  3. "Look or SPD?"
Geez, I've heard this question so many times that it begins to
resemble a troll, and I haven't been around long. There's so many
pedal types around now that can't be categorized as one of those types.
Around central Texas, I see so many Speedplays on bikes that I think
they have the biggest market share.
