Hi guys and gals, just thought I would get some feedback from anyone who owns a Giant. I have a 2004 XTC3 and would like to hear from others who have a similar or any Giant bike. :)

I have a Giant Cypress DX, new this year. I really like it. We're in the market for another bike for hubby....Giant is definitely under consideration. But I think most important is the dealership and since my Trek/Cannondale dealer is a total freaking idiot, those two lines are ruled out.

i haven't got one but the but the sub £500 ones have some really cheap parts so they can have other parts which are more expensive e.g. really cheap cranks so that the bike can have hydrolic disks

i had a 2001 XTC nrs 1, and it was a great bike, i rode it very hard for about 3 years and the only thing i replaced was the wheels, first generation tubeless wheelsets. the frame though rode straight, true and flawlessly!!!

I had a Giant mountain bike a few years back. Great bike, but I outgrew it pretty fast and now I have a Trek. Gotta love Giant though.

as you (probably) know i have an '05 XTC2, its pretty sweet, all ive upgraded so far is the chain (SRAM hollow pin pc89r from crappy shimano HG-i-cant-remeber) and im sortof thinking of upgrading the wheels but i want either bontranger valiant or crossmax's (only reason being to make it lighter so i can haul my fat ass up those hills easier hopefully lol)
but all the standard parts are already pretty awesome esp. for the price of the bike, i work in a bike shop so i got mine extra cheap :D but retail is even pretty good.
i dont realy need to upgrade anything, only reason i did with the chain is so i can pop it off to clean it (came with a crappy shimano chain- BAH) and SRAM is better, in my opinion anyway and if you disagree, well whatever.
might also get a lockout for my skarebs ive found that it would be quite useful in some races ive done (mostly team races just for the fun of it) so im gonna tlak to a guy i know that services alot of shocks and see if its worth it or mabie ill just buy some higher end skarebs or something
the only other thing ill consider upgrading is the front deraleur but theres not really any point except to get rid of it cuase its shimano and shed a few grams (oh wow what a waste of time) so ill probly just wait untill it dies (its shimano, it wont take long :p j/k)

the only thing i dont like about it (just me *****ing about nothing really) is the glossy black paint, ive had gloss black bikes before and when they get scratched they look **** cuse the clear stuff looks white and all the scratches show up real bad but otherwise i think it looks pretty good

i dunno how many people know but giant also make trek, scott, gary fisher, specialized, and i cant think of any more at the moment but im sure there are more, all those brands frames (except the real high end ones in most cases i think) the only other brand i was considering getting otehr than the giant was a jamis but i was going to have to wait a bit longer for jamis'

im also going to buy a giant road bike (probly the TCR2) and mabie an STP or something just to play around on

anyway thats enough bs form me...

umm the iguana (the most basic giant mtb with hydraulic brackes - hayes sole) hes some decent truvative iso-flow cranks and i dunno aobut you but id rather some cheaper cranks and some decent brakes than some real high end crank and **** brakes

also on cheaper bikes.. when was the last time you saw someone brake a basic model crank ? (within reason, not an undertightened one or trying to land some stupidly big jump on a basic bike) only thing is that its gonna be lighter, most people buying a basic mountian bike would want the better brakes than shed a little weight thats not going to even help them to any large extent, buy a better bike.. get better parts what do you expect ?

You're kidding, right? You've GOTTTA be.

Trek/ Gary Fisher/ and Lemond are one company

Specialized hasnt sold out to anyone, as far as I know.

Ever been to a dealer who sold all of these at once? My fav. LBS is a trek/ GF/ Lemond dealer. They dont deal with Giant, though they used to. Nor with GT/ Pacific. I guess Quintana Roo is also a Giant company, too? Whatever.

Giant rocks! I have been building/modding Giants(and others) for almost as long as I've been in the mtb scene, and they are the best for the money I have yet seen. Few brands I have seen actually have raceworthy upgrades built into the potential of a 150 dollar bike. I run a XTC and 92 Sedona ATX and both are stellar performers. The dealer relationship is above par of any brand I have seen.

So far as that rumor that Giant makes or is made by trek or the others, I really don't think it holds water. Trek Group is its own entity, Trek, Gary Fisher, Klien, and a couple others are made under the auspices of the Wisconsin based company. Giant is engineered in Cali, and for the most part produced in Taiwan. Proof enough Taiwan can make good stuff.

roumer ? i work ina shop that deals with giant, we can also get trek and specialised in but we dont cause whats the point... i dunno aobut the prices where you guys are but cause of giants prices here theres not really mjuch competition for them

anyway think what you want but its not a roumer, go ask a local giant dealer. those brands i mentioned all use giant drawn tubing and are made in giant factorys

Well, thats the first quantifiable evidence I have seen. Around PA at least, the Trek dealers are leaps and bounds more expensive than the Giants.

Just because bike brands 'supposedly' come from the same factory doesn't mean that the or a bike shop can get them all in. Perhaps it is because you have accounts with the distributors of the bikes? AFAIK, Specialized and Giant are distributed by different companies in the Oceania region.

If they do come out of the same factory, it doesn't mean that Giant builds them as a 'giant bicycle' with Trek or Specialized or whatever brand name on them. It is more likely that (if the do come out of the same factory) that Trek, Specialized etc use some of Giant's facilities/machines (which is in the "Giant" factory) to produce THEIR bikes, to THEIR specifications and THEIR quality.

Specialized have been using their M1 - M4 alloys for donkeys years. You can't tell me that the current M4 and M5 alloys are the same as Giant's Alcoa/ALUXX tubes.?!

Same with car suspension systems. Old Man Emu shocks (4wd) are built in the Monroe factory, but to their specific valving and construction standards.

And besides, in my personal opinion, Specialized bikes have a much higher level quality of finish than Giant's. ;)
