  1. I am looking for new road tires and have no idea how to sort through the 100
or so I see for sale. I am in need of a good set of all around tires. I
train and race in a mostly dry location, ride on average to good roads, but
have been having a lot of flats lately due to road debris. I am racing both
1/2 IM and OLY races in the nest few months and want a tough tire that isn't
too heavy. I do not have a different set of race wheel so these will be all
purpose tires on my everyday wheels. Any suggestions. BTW how long should
a set of tires last. I have about 1300 miles on my current tires and they
    are getting fairly thin.

    Thanks,
    AJ

  2. I use the upper end selection of Specialized or Michelins on my clincher
wheels for training. I use folding Kevlar belted for durability. Look for
a tire with plenty of threads. I have had good luck with continentals
except that the sidewall seem a bit more vulnerable/fragile.

Mileage depends on many factors. When I am fit and race ready I only get
500 to 700 miles out of a rear tire. Lots of time in the hills will bring
that down to 300 before a change is required. When possible try to ride
the road in a line that is where the outside tire on an auto runs. That is
generally a clean zone. If you ride roads that have a rumble strip between
a shoulder and the road then stay out of the rumble strip or learn to jump
over it as those depressions hold tiny wire pieces that have come from
shredded wire belted tires. Kona IM course is loaded with them. Keep your
tire inflated to near max to minimize snake bite and avoid any gravel or
stones. Wet roads will cause you to flat far more frequently than dry
roads. The water hides the glass and lubricates the rubber tire for an easy
penetration by all flat causing debris.
