Anyone using Vetta Wireless speed and cadence?

Hi,

Just got myself a Vetta V100HR computer and it came with the wireless speed
and cadence kit.

Wondering if anyone else out there is using one and has had any problems
with it.

I have just fitted it to my bike and as i am going to do a bit of work on an
indoor trainier i though it would be nice to get my speed data from the rear
wheel. I figured that if the head unit can recieve from the cadence sender
on the chain stay that there was a fair chance it could recieve from the
speed sender if i put it on the rear stay just below the brake caliper.

Both senders are working and transmitting but the computer doesn't give me
any readings when on the handlebars. It will however give me both cadence
and speed when i hold the unit at around half way along the top tube.

Is this a low battery issue? Surely the system works over larger distances
than that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Gary

No, that's fairly normal. These things put out very low levels of RF
power to conserve battery life in the sender unit. Some units (eg Polar)
have a jumper in the sender unit that you can set to extend the range
slightly at the expense of battery life. Maybe check your docs?

Nothing in the intruction manual i recieved with the computer :(

Surely they wouldn't make a wireless computer, that comes with a handlebar
mount, that you have to actually mount on the top tube under the nose of the
saddle before you got any readings on it. lol

Thanks for the reply mate
Will maybe have to contact Vetta.

I think they expect you to mount the speed sensor on the front fork,
as close to the reciever as possible (at least that's what my Polar
instructions say). Which sucks if you're using a trainer, I know
need all the gadget data motivation I can get to use my trainer...

I was thinking i would just have to bite the bullet and move the speed
sensor to the forks and maybe use the speed setup of an old wired computer i
have for the trainer. However that still does not solve the problem of the
cadence readings doing the same thing. i.e. no reading shows with the
computer mounted on the bars :(

Oh, missed this point. Obviously if you aren't getting readings from the
cadence sensor mounted in the right spot and the computer on the bars,
then it's faulty..

Thats what i am worried about, i purchased it off ebay :(

Have you tried putting the cadence sensor on the same side of the bike
as the computer? Assuming the computer is on one of the other bar?

Also, (long shot, messy) you could try and make a form of antenna, wrap
some some thin wire around the cadence sensor and then run the wire up the
seat tube, along the top tube (not necessarily all the way to the actual
computer). It might just be enough....

The difference laterally of the sensors and the computer is only about 2
inches. I actaully have to move it from the handlebars to half way along the
top tube before i get any readings. I will try the wire trick and see if
anything changes. I don't really mind a small wire or 2 as i bought this
comp for hr and cadence features, it just happened that when i opened th box
it had the wireless kit in it instead. Thought it was a bonus at the time :)

On 2005-07-20, dtmeister (aka Bruce)
was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea:

What's the point of a wireless computer again? ;)

The gedanken experiment failed. I couldn't reproduce the results -- TimC

:) Yeah, well, at least he might get cadence readings considering he may not
have warranty options. RF and antennas can be fun. He might not even
need that long a piece of wire, just wrapping it around the sensor
body (hopefully this will pick up enough RF) and then leaving a 5 cm
"whip" antenna could do the trick.

I had the same problem. The device wouldn't receive from the sender if
it was behind the bottom bracket. Useless!

Marty,

Did you get it sorted mate or just end up throwing it in the bin?

I gave it away to a friend that wasn't so worried about reliability.
