anything other than prune juice for purgative?

prune juice works pretty good for constipation but it's too sweet and
upsets my stomach and makes me feel kinda nauseous.

is there something natural that's just as effective and not sweet or
not as sweet?

I've read that wheatgrass juice can do the job, but I can't confirm
that. Unless you went to a juice bar or have a friend who raises
wheatgrass it may take you a week to get this! Bad things could happen
in that time! ;-)

Also, there are herbal laxatives you can buy. I'm assuming they are
"natural" though you'd take them as a tablet instead of "drinking" them
-- even though you are to drink plenty of water with them.

Prunes

Equalactin

Docusate Sodium

Daily dose of Fiber Tabs to stay regular if it's an ongoing thing
(Costco has them cheap)

Ohh yeah, and I mean straight pitted prunes.

And they are not sweet like the juice.
It's almost like eating raisins, but with a different flavor.

I used to have a _lot_ of problems due to IBS.
I've personally found that just eating good, mostly fresh (few canned)
veggies on a daily basis has solved all of my problems!

I make up a stir fry for dad and I at least twice per week that contains
a good protein source, usually chicken, shrimp, thin sliced pork, eggs,
turkey, fish, or whatever, combined liberally with 3 or 4 veggies from
any of the following:

Bamboo shoots
water chestnuts
baby corn
(these are all canned, the rest are fresh)

button Mushrooms
shitake mushrooms
portabello mushrooms
oyster mushrooms
bok choy
baby bok choy
onions
brocolli
cauliflower
celery
daikon radish
red radish
scallions
shallots
carrots
string beans
reconstituted dried kelp
swiss chard (any color)
mustard greens
sliced cabbage
beet greens
endive
artichoke hearts (pre-steamed)
tomatoes
avocados
spinach
baby spinach

and whatever other veggie looks interesting
at the thai store. ;-)

Flavor with fresh ground black and/or white pepper
fresh grated ginger, either fresh or powdered
garlic and other herbs/spices to taste.

Both me and dad rarely ever suffer from
irregularity with daily consumption of
high fiber, low starch veggies and it's
a very satisfying diet!

Raisin bran. The brands in bags like Malt-O-Meal seem to be the most
economical. I eat the stuff like a snack, not in milk like a cereal.
Better than anything else I've tried.

A moderate portion of a Bran cereal (say, 50g - I use All Bran) and at
least 3ltrs of water a day; that does it for me.

Also, large amounts of raw tomatoes or dill pickles.

Just about any large consumption of veggies, cooked or raw, will make
you regular, almost too much sometimes! ;-)

I made a sea food chowder the other day that contained shrimp, clams,
baby octopus, pureed water chestnuts (as the thickener in place of
spuds), bok choy, shredded seaweed, diakon radish, onions, shallots. and
coconut milk, and flavored with grated garlic, grated ginger, powdered
white pepper and a little bit of stir fry sauce.

Two nice big bowls of that per day for the past two days.....

Now I know why the chinese are never constipated. <G>

If you eat the recommended servings of fresh or canned veggies/fruits
per day, you should never have a problem, providing you also drink
plenty of water.

This is good advice in general but a little unfair to people who do
their best to eat right and have medical conditions that give them
troubles anyway. Diverticulitis can give alternating periods of
diarrhea and constipation despite best efforts. Psychological
conditions can give one a "nervous stomach." They can also stop one up.
It can be easy for some people to get on a different sleep schedule
after jet lag but almost impossible to get their bowels working on
schedule again despite a good diet. I'm sure there are other medical
peculiarities that have an effect too.

Personally, it is against my policy to eat babies!

how old are you and how long have you had problems with constipation?

how many bowel movements do you have say in a week?

are you taking any medications and what herbal stuff are you taking

what have you done for this in the past

any medical problems we should know about?

thyroid? diabetes

any work up done?--colonoscopy upperendoscopy etc

reason i ask is tha constipation may or may not be signs of a more
serious problem

after you fet up in the am and have something to eat of ddrink

what happens to your need to defecate or nothing happpens--say with in
20 min utes

looking for gastriccolic reflec--may people who fool with therir bowels
have for all purposes toatlly interfered with this reflec and start to
have problems with constipation.
