Are 82mm wheels UCI legal for road races?

The info on this seems to be harder to find than I thought :)

The last I heard, the only 'main' requirement was that wheels had to have 16 or more spokes. I figure it's safe to assume that if some of the CSC guys are using 808s in mass-start races, then it's ok

Anyway, here's a link to the UCI rules. I couldn't be bothered looking for the excat bit :p

Funny; I read another link which said spokes have to be "made of metal", so what then happens to the carbon spokes on some of the 'fancy' wheels? :)

Old post, new answer.

If the wheel is deeper than 2.5cm, it needs to successfully pass a rupture test to be approved for use in a mass start road race.

The link above provides a list of non-standard but approved wheels. On this list are the deep section wheels that can be used. All others are illegal.

This list also provides wheels that are legal that have fewer than 16 spokes and/or spoke thickness greater than 2.4mm than standard wheels.
