Are front derailler cables for road bikes the same as ones for mountain bikes?

Are front derailler cables for road bikes the same as ones for mountain bikes? I'm wondering this because all the roadie cables that Performance sells are above $50, while the ones for mountain bikes can be $5.

Put down the crack pipe.Cables are never $50. Road and mtb derailer cables use different ends, but some are sold as universal with a different end on each end,and you cut off the one you don't need.

Oh yeah, are there any cable recommendations out there? Is there any difference between the generic stainless steel and the teflon coated types?
