Are the wheels too light for touring???

Bugger. I hope it works out well, Kathy.
You're making cairns sound even smaller than it was four years ago -
there used to be at four decent (but overpriced) bike shops there.

Yes it does - shame that I just cant test ride. Getting to a point where I
am just going to go and buy one from the catalogue. I was to go to Brisbane
but a death in the family and I really need to get out on my new bike to
settle out the bumps.
Kathy.

Hi Kathy
I know how frustrating your situation is.

We have had to go to Cairns to buy things occasionally because the range in Townsville is Very limited. Its a shock after living in Melbourne! 360km is a bit of a way to go for a shopping spree but what the heck.
As you can see we do have a good number of shops and range of bikes in Townsville.

Anaconda Townsville PDF catalogue 5.2 mb. I know they have Jamis and half a dozen other brands. 4725 3133

Bicycle Centre: Giant, Norco, Diamond Back 47715800

BNG Sports: "Exclusive Brands"? Blue 47798262

Qld Cycle Supplies: Trek, Garry Fisher, Diamond Back, Lemond. 47757640

Tony's Bikes: Kona, Gitane, Iron Horse, Felt, Rocky Mountain, Wheeler. 47281073

Top Brand: Specialized, Avanti, Raleigh, Cannondale, Bianchi, Colagno, Cinelli, Cinelli, Santa Cruz, Tarini.
47254269 ( my LBS. speak with Mike the owner and ask for test ride. Always very accomodating, thats why I shop there!)

Toy Toys R Us: Shop is chocka with bikes but never been in there! 47790277

Sam Bratton Cycle World: ??? 4773 4814

Perhaps a couple of phone calls to might establish if a trip is worth it. We are on "Warm Showers" if you decide to come down.

Anthony Mann is currently touring around OzByBike and is riding a Cannondale. There is a pic on this page.

Cheers

I'd also recommend Top Brand particularly for road, touring and track
gear. Reasonable mechanics as well... They also do Surly and can get
custom made frames.

Toys R Us, Bicycle Centre and Tony's are primarily mountain bike
orientated. I've found both the Bicycle Centre and Tony's good to deal
with in the past. Toy R Us has a lot of road bikes but not a lot of
accessories and don't seem that interested in them.

BNG are still setting up and are focused on the high end road market.
I've heard some good things about them though and the Blue bikes look
pretty good.

Lastly Anaconda is run by the previous owner of Top Brand (Alan) and I'm
told carries a fair bit of cycle gear. I'm actually going to check it
out today.

Cheers
