Wow, I'm jealous. I'd love to be able to afford to do the whole restoration thing. It'd be cool to see some pics of your collection!

I'm a casual rider.I have an old Ross Gran Tour XII, twelve speed, with shimano, alloy wheels, etc in great condition, that I picked up from an old rider that wasn't using it. Its a nice ride and I'm inclined to use it for fun. Is it possible the bike has substantial value and should be hung back up in the gararge?
Thanks........Ken

so....can you ride bikes?

I'm a bike fanatic too - I have 14 bikes - 6 bmx, 2 mtn, 6 road bikes. Collection is worth $23005.

I'm mostly a road biker now, but I used to do freestyle bmx and now I only like old school bmx bikes.

But I think old 70's road bikes are junk. Would be nice to see what your best bike looks like ( a pic).

Something of a blanket statement, wouldn't you agree?

When my repco super light is working, I burn off plenty of CF's in the battle of the commuters

I have never seen an appealing old road bike at a thrift store and I consider them junk. But my old 1987 Raleigh Marathon was nice enough but I sold it back in the 90's.

Well, let's see some pics to see if old stuff can really be nice!

Well, I do not know about a thrift store, but a specialissima from the 1970s was truly a thing of beauty.

Well, check out this website for a few beauties...

But I have taken the liberty of copying a couple of the pictures from that site...

I assume it is [was?] for the 'Stucchi' bicycle brand - the 'Giá Prinetti Stucchi' in upper right corner means 'previously known as Prinetti Stucchi'. I wish I could read the emblem on the bottom right, all I get is that it was a company based in Milano.

Hope that helps.

I have a 1984 Giant Schwinn. It's a World Sport. I covered the pink half of the Schwinn logos because no one remembers Don Johnson's version of Sonny Crockett or may not make the connection to the bike's age.

I used to be into the cheaper, chrome steel ones but when I started putting steady road miles on one or two I quickly realized the rear axle is not long-lived. I can keep a 120mm 5-spd alive with careful riding but not a 126. So it's worth finding a better one which is worth upgrading the rear hub.

If you're over 150lb, check out Nashbar.com. I got a 27" freehub rear wheel for $60. The rest of the bike is stock although it is a little slow shifting into the biggest or smallest chainrings.

Yeah, these things are great. I now like the "slightly better than department store" ones because you can easily find lots of them with few miles.
If anyone knows of an upgrade for the rear axle such as a 12mm rear axle for standard hubs, please let me know. It would be great to be able to use the stock rear wheel.
