Race website: National Cycling Championships - home

The 10.2km Buninyong circuit is without doubt the ideal course to determine Australia's best male and female road cyclists, with challenging climbs, fast winding downhills and a tough flat sprint to the line.

A variety of viewing areas providing up close access to riders, has enabled a "Europen-type" feel to the event, with 15,000 spectators expected to flock to the grand finale - the Men's Open Road Race on Sunday.

The lay-out of the course is as follows;

0km – 3.2km: Climb (start has an elevation of 434m, top of King of the Mountain is 590m)

Average ascend of 5%, with some sections reaching 8-9% gradient increase.
The severity of the climb sees riders limp to the KOM finish to the cheer of a
European-type crowd.

3.2km – 3.7km: Flat followed by an undulating rise

5.0km – 9.7km: Fast / sharp corners, followed by undulating downhill
(start of downhill is 574m and the end flattens out to 434m)

Shaded vantage points providing spectators with a view that demonstrates the amazing strength and skill required to be an international rider.

William Clarke doing 40kph up the climb hanging on to a car was the highlight of the race for me.

Bobridge is the only rider in the Top 10 that rings any bells with me.

It was a strange race by all accounts. The early break stuck.

Travis Meyer is with Garmin, just came on board with them. Freak bike rider, but they say his older bro is better (reigning world points score champ). You will hear plenty about the pair of them in coming years.

Van Hout is a former Aussie champ and finished a couple of Giros

Salzburger was a gun U23, think he is with FDJ

The others are all very handy on a national level, former Australian reps at Junior or U23 level, or in the case of someone like Pell capable of winning Herald Sun Tour stages or Melbourne to Warnambools.

Weird race all right, the winning break goes in the 1st 500mts of 160km event!. No-one from the bunch looked particularly interested in chasing, for all his touted 'interest' in making amends for last year, Rogers showed no interest at all. Only saw Howard on the front a few times around the middle of the race & Goss obviously wasn't having a good day. Rogers never went to the front to force the pace, leaving it to the domestic pro's to organize something, but it was too little too late.Cookie was the 'stand out' for me, never seen him looking so lean, perhaps a new team has given him some motivation, maybe a crack at the spring classics is on the cards. Both Davis' looked ordinary, struggled to hold on each lap over the climb. Lloyd did a bit to force the pace late in the race, but had no assistance from anyone. Obviously 'Fly V' with 3 in the initial break & garmin with 2, had little interest in anything but a 'Sunday pootle'

Cookie looks very fit, its great to see him back on a decent team.

Both Davis brothers both look like they could lose 10KG's

Bwhahaha, yep they both looked like they've had a decent 'offie', which surprises me a little, I thought Allan, at least might have some interest in defending his TDU.

I remember wondering who the fat blokes in the Astana kit were?..I thought they might have been left overs from the 'recreational' ride in the morning!:D

3/4 the way up the hill, best spot to watch the suffering....& there was plenty of that. Quite a few 'ROFLMAO' moments with the spectators & the riders. Favourites:

Our mate Steffo decided he probably didn't have the legs to finish (hadn't trained specifically for this), so decided he might as well go out in a 'blaze of glory', so burst out of the bunch on about lap 3 to try & bridge to the break, (& get his photo taken & name called out by the commentators!)...spent 4 laps by himself between the break & the bunch....by about the 4th lap away, he was looking pretty ordinary...but we probably knew it was all over when he came up the hill the next time....eating a hot dog! ROFLMAO.

The seppo on the Fly V team was a DNF with probably 5 laps to go...he pedals up the hill & gets off right next to us...as the break comes around the next time, he starts running beside kemps yelling 'Good job, good job', with bidon in his hand...makes to pour some over his head & kemps swerves away to get away from him...undeterred our Seppo friend has another go at drowning him, only for kemps to turn & yell "Will you fark off"!....Seppo stops running right in the middle of the road & narrowly misses getting 'collected' by the commissaire vehicle, who also abuses the fark out of him!....seppo walks over, obviously struggling to understand the local 'venacular' & says "what did they say"?....My mate goes, "Well your team mate thinks you're a farkwit & so does the commissaire & I reckon if we take a vote of everyone on the hill, it'll be unanimous"...ROFLMAO

The 2010 Scody Australian Open Road Cycling Championships have come to an end. Ballarat hosted five incredible days of cycling action where new champions were crowned and new names etched into cycling history. The weather was a challenge, with hundreds of male and female cyclists taking on one another in near 40 degree hea

G'day, Lim.
Travis and Cameron Meyer started out with Midland Cycling Club (who my daughter rides with). They are both great ambassadors and role models for the junior riders.
As you will have noticed in the TDU, Cameron is making a strong comeback from 2009 surgery, and put in a fine effort for Garmin Transitions in Stage 5.
They are both very promising young riders with good attitudes.
