What's the view on Avanti. Lets say for example 2005 Giro for ~$1600AU.

Avanti make some very good bikes that are competitively priced.

$1600 sounds a bit much for a 2005 Giro - you should be able to get a 2006 Giro for that price.

    Hi

a friend of mine got a FELT 55 from SHM bikes in Melbourne for $1550 AU,
and its a got 10 speed Dur-ace, shifters, front and rear derailleur. I'd say frame is similiar to the Avanti but at this price the components look better, but it does'nt include the pedals like the avanti does.

So that's a 2005 Giro? The one that I saw in an eastern suburbs shop was red/white/black, 105 9 speed. That's a 2005 not a 2006 - is that right? Does anyone rekon that's good enough for a 1st up buy into cycling - good enough for starters, maybe looking to race C grade with CCCC? Or should we go up to Ultegra on a Giant TCR for $2400?

Red/White/Black sounds like a 2006 Giro to me.

At entry/internediate level racing, speed is much more to do with the rider's abilities and training than the 0.5-0.6kg you might save by spending an extra $800... whether that's worth it to you is a matter for you to work out on your own.

    Cheers,

    Hi

It was on the end of a year sale, however if you look closely at the specs
you'll see its not all dura-ace and the carbon frame specs are quite low.

    Dura-ace sti shifters
    Dura-ace front and rear derailleur

    No name brake set
    Mavic askium wheelset
    Tru-Vativ crankset
    No name bottom bracket
Shimano 10 speed cassette (not dura-ace, I don't think) on a Mavic Askim 9 speed hub, they put in a thick spacer to make it 10 speed compatibile.

So its only three dura-ace items to keep the price down.

Also the frame has a carbon fork and carbon seat stays not the chainstays

    Regards
    Ken

That's an awesome deal, even if was only Ultegra. Less than what I paid for my F75. Did they have many sizes?
