Looks like something unique to Universal Cycles or a photo
artifact. The Azonic site doesn't show the ridges:

Time to correct my own mistake...

I looked at the wrong photo on Azonic's site. Based on the
description and photo at the following link, I would guess
it's part of the "textured finish on the ends for better
grip adhesion".
