The levers are on the handlebars, one on the left I think, controls the
front gear wheels (3) on the pedals and the right hand one the rear 5 .....
Does that sound right?
I was just wondering how I use them in combination.

Yep, that sounds right. Well, you know bigger gear on
the front and smaller gear on the back makes it harder
to pedal, but you go faster and vice versa.
I guess you could remember "small lever small sprocket".
The small left lever will shift into a smaller chainring (front
sprocket - making it easier to pedal) and the small right
lever will shift into a smaller rear sprocket (harder to pedal).
The big left and right levers (basically the whole brake
lever) will do the opposite.
The best thing to do is ride it and mess around with the
gears - if tuned ok it's pretty hard to mess them up.
Just get into a gear where you can pedal "easily" and
aren't putting loads of pressure on your knees (spinning
the pedals at 80-90rpm is a good idea but don't worry
about this if you're just starting out).
If you can keep the gears (and your knees :-) ) from
making horrible grinding noises you are probably
doing fine.
