Aye, left home at 09:30 and got back 12ish. It were cold, crisp & sunny in
Leicestershire.
My body was fine, my feet toasty in Shimano W100's and walking socks, my
head was ok too in a balaclava after an initial bout of frozen cheekbones
but me hands were a bit nippy in a pair of Seal Skinz Winter Gloves. More
research needed!

Did a 200k permanent yesterday (Mark Beauchamp's "An Anorak's Delight").
It was definitely not the warmest day of the year so far, especially
after it got dark. On one hill the freezing fog had formed a sheet of
ice so that it was impossible to ride up it. The back wheel just spun
ineffectually. I had to walk up but even that was tricky as my feet were
slipping. Leaning on the bike for support it kept sliding away from me
too. It must have looked like a scene from a Buster Keaton film.

After finishing I had to go into an Indian restaurant to thaw out and
refuel with the result that I missed the last train from Reading and had
to ride the extra 50 or so km home. During this last bit my Lucozade
Sport froze into a solid block in the bidon.

More commited to the cause that me. I'm definitely turning into a
fair-weather cyclist, [not that I was ever in any other league anyway
really]. I did a few miles on the upright through the lanes today,
just to get out of the house and stretch legs, but found it to be a
very precarious experience. Fine when the sun's had some time on the
road, but a nightmare in the shade, especially descending.

Not really cold here yet.. There isn't enough ice to justify swapping
to the studded tyres.
I might go out this evening for a quick spin, but I'll probably9 do th
emajor descending on th emain road where there will be much less risk
of frost.

Does one have jooks? Do jooks require medicating? Are jooks infectious?

Yes, indeed. 'Handbrake turns' come to mind too!

In fact, after riding the recumbent quite a bit in the summer, I think
I got used to being nearer to the ground and felt really 'perched up
there in the stars' today. The feeling of 'further to fall' on some of
those frosty roads was quite unnerving at times. Still. nice to be
able to see over the hedgerows though!

Yup ... not the nicest. Stayed in most of today then decided to go out for a
couple of hours. Just got back and my toes and just about getting some
temperature back into them. I've decided I'm going to have to do something
about my toes. I've got some "inside the shoes neoprene thingies", but my
shoes are pretty tight already. I might even consider getting proper winter
shoes, if there's something decent out there.

Advice appreciated!

At Mildenhall I tried on all the winter shoes I could find, but nothing
fitted. Why do they think all cyclists have such narrow feet? Next week
ABW I'll head for Cantab City and try Shimano's offering, their M031
summer shoes have served well for 6 years, although very close fitting for
my wide feet.

Shimano are known for being narrow. Northwave or Sidi are what you
want. The Northwave winter boots are excellent. I have a couple of
pairs and they have been warm and lasted years.

I just did a gentle 25 miles on my standard routes ( just slow maintenance
getting ready for my trip from the source of the Rhein to Rotterdam in 2006
in my 68th year). A cotton balaclava under my helmet kept my ears warm. It
has been a beautiful 2 or 3 days and the forecasts promise me good late year
daily cycling for the rest of the week. I was back home for a slightly late
lunch with a rosemary roast shoulder of lamb -- more fat but so much more
flavour and so moist! although I eat alone I still enjoy a traditional
Sunday roast!

But all in all it is so good riding this week!

Wow .. £100 for a pair of winter boots on Wiggle. So I managed to slip my
feet into my shoes with the neoprene layer things on my feet. I think I'll
try that next time.

I'm *so* glad I got the Look booties trainer-type shoes. They are great
whatever the weather. In winter I simply add an extra pair of socks (from my
rambling days) and they keep my feet nice & toastie, but are not too hot for
the summer months.

That seems to be the going price for winter boots from Shimano or
Northwave but I usually buy mine for about half that in the summer at
York or Mildenhall - although the selection at Mildenhall this year was
thin. Chain Reaction have last year's Shimano model at £60.

Sidi Inverno (SPD-type cleat) of Freeze (same boot with sole for
Look-type cleat). Recommended.
