aluminum bars, because aluminum requires a thicker wall to provide adequate strength.

Once (a long time ago) I remember poking a 3/4" countersink (~19mm) into the end of a 7/8" aluminum
bar to make the inside diameter large enough to fit Bar-Cons. Seemed to work fine, but that bike was
not ridden by any gorillas.
I used a countersink (instead of a drill) because it tends to center in the hole and also feeds
slowly, due to different cutting edge geometry. A regular twist drill might tend to grab and ruin
the handlebar...
