My LBS guy told me that carbon handlebars are usually aluminum-
reinforced on the ends so as to accommodate bar ends. You just have
to be careful to tighten them only to the appropriate torque (whatever
that is, exactly).

Of course, his description of the care required to do this scared me
off the idea entirely and I have decided to forego bar ends unless I
decide I simply can't live without them.

I have those on my SS. They are so expensive for what they are, but
very purdy!

Heh, I didn't picture you as a bar end kind of guy. I've only got them
on the aluminum bars of my SS.

I use the ODI lock on grips (similar but not exactly what you are
talking about) on the Monkey Lites on my Epic with no problems.

Um, those are rubber inserts for holding your grips on.
I doubt they do much to prevent a carbon handlebar
from cracking when using bar ends.

Right. There are some better gadgets to reinforce handlebar ends
