I am very interested into getting into mountain and road biking. I live in a pretty flat place but will be traveling to somewhere with mountain trails. I have no knowledge of what bikes to look into and/or tips on actual mountain biking. If someone could help me out that would be awesome. I have been told to look into the Trek 3 series for a beginner bike but this was by a bike store owner so I just don't want to get taken because I don't know anything. I am a complete noob at this so any help would be awesome! Thank you!

I was recommended a Trek Navigator 3 by a store owner as well. I have been told by others it's a good starter bike for new riders like us. In fact, it's listed in the bike's I was most recommended when I visited a bunch of stores today.
I too am looking for advice and help choosing from this community and posted a topic here: http://www.cyclingforums.com/t/488470/just-another-newbie-who-needs-help-with-buying-a-bike
I'm sure there are more great bike's that didn't make it on the list in the $400-$600 price range, but at some point we gotta make a decision ;^)
