(thanks for the responses...)
I have a Giant Defy 3 with just about 350 miles.
Sorry for the wrong terminology, it was the smallest chain ring (front set). I was shifting from the middle gear to the smallest at the bottom of a steep hill so tension was high as I shifted.
I just took it to a local shop and learned I had other terminology wrong. Technically I had the bottom bracket replaced the day before I bent the chain ring.
They are going to look at it tomorrow but their immediate response was it was most likely just a freak accident. The replacement ring is only $15 but I'll upgrade that now.
This is the third time I had to take this bike into a shop and I've only been seriously riding for about the last month. First, the handlebars didn't move very easily. The shop where I bought it ended up adjusting bearings in the headset and that seems fine now. Then, I heard a small pop each time my left foot came up and it felt like I was slipping just a very little bit each time my left foot came up. That's how I ended up with a new bottom bracket. Now I bend a chain ring.
Good news is I'm learning a lot about road bikes. The only thing that really bothers me is I can't ride... I was on pace for 300 miles this month and all of these problems keep setting me back.
