Hi,
I want to buy a mountain bike. What are the best ( qulaity, gear etc ) in the following price ranges -
Up to $A1000
Up to $A1500
Up to $A2000
Should I consider rear suspension and/or disc brakes. ?

Well Lenny it really depends on what you are after and what sort of riding you do. I for one would not spend under $A2000 for a full suspension bike - you end up with a heavy low end equioed bike. Stick with a hard tail, wander round the shops (Braddon should do you just fine with 3 shops within 300m) - Kona or Norco at Mals, Giant at the Bike Shed would do you just fine. Cannondale will cost you an extra 10% for the name

I want to do mainly cycle path riding and the occasional fire trail and other off road riding......nothing too hardcore..

I ride with Gremica System 8 hydrolic discs (shimano XT are the same design) and love them they are fantastic in the wet (not that we have had much in Canberra lately) and have excellent modulation - ie one finger can slow you down or stop you on a dime.
However, by the sound of the riding you are talking about then I would go with v-brakes. Again you will get more bang for your buck.
I would recomend something like a Kona Cynder Kone - good level of components, solid frame, reasonable fork all for around $A1500

What do you think of Learsport ?

Don't really know much about Learsport other than they don't come with after sales support. A bike is only as good as the person who puts it together. Its is important to have a look at the bike shop that you are buying your bike from. If the mechanics and the store are busy, lots of bikes in for services etc, you can be pretty sure that you will get a bike that is well put together and you will get good after sale service.
Re the $2000 dont forget you will need other stuff - helmet, pump, gloves, knicks and maybe lights too - this could be $350 worth of you budget.
For $2000 you will end up with a similar frame, maybe LX running gear with an XT rear derailur and maybe cable discs and a slightly better fork. Again, for the type of riding you are talking about do you needto spend the extra 500 clams?. I suppose you could go a lower end full suspension beast ($2200) but then you will be lugging around a little extra weight - they are more fun than a hardtail though.
