Best Non $1000 Mountain Bike For Kid ?

Hello All

what a great forum here, I am very happy to have this resource

Question: With no desire to buy at Wal-Mart, Academy, etc (Huffy, etc), what is the best first-time mountain bike for my 8 year and girl and 10 year old son. I can spend 300-ish $$$ but not looking to spend $5000 for a mountain bike.

Riding will be NPS trails and camp ground areas near our house, and city parks in between that, along with neighborhood sidewalks.

Kids are sized for 24 inch.

Trek MT 200 or 220. Specialized Hotrock 24. Many other brands have bikes of this sort, including Giant, Felt, Scott, Cannondale, and Raleigh. If you want to spend a little more, there's Trek's Superfly 24. And I think Raleigh's Tokul 24 and Eva 24 (for the girls) are especially cool.
