I just coughed up $40 for this year for NBCSports Gold. Was this stupid? Is there an easier and cheaper way to get my cycling fix (pro circuit) in the USA?

No not stupid, there are some online sources but you would end up paying the same or more, and plus I like NBC's coverage!

Yea it's good coverage. $39 USD is a bit steep but it's for the whole year. I wish I could choose other races too. Like the woman's races. I find them fun too.

I have Infinity solely for its Tour de France coverage. But I would like to see the spring classics and the other major tours as well. Hell, I can't even get the Tour of California.
