If you are trying to buy a used book through Amazon, Amazon is simply a
middleman and the book will come from an independent dealer. I collect old
books and generally use http://www.bookfinder.com . You can search by title,
author or if you click on "show more options," ISBN. ISBN is probably the
best way to verify edition unless the book predates the system. Any decent
book dealer will tell you the edition and date of publish before selling a
book. Look up your book and you will probably find out what you need to
know.
